I read that robot companies try their best to design robots as nonthreatning and 'cute' as possible to make them more acceptable to people. They are generally smaller than an average human, as a 2,5 meter tall hulking mechanical monstrosity would make most people uncomfortable. Also they are just humanoid enough to create a familiarity but not too much to avoid the uncanny valley.
