My Animal Crossing Villager Designs
Throughout the week, I've been drawing Animal Crossing villagers I've designed myself. I have drawn concept art of them about a month ago, but it wasn't until this month I wanted to go back, refine the designs, and do fully rendered art of them. Now that I'm done, I'll talk about each character from left to right:
Torti- The idea behind this one is that I wanted to make a pasta themed villager because pasta is my all time favorite food, specifically tortellini. Tortellini kind of reminds me of mouse ears. Thus, I went with a mouse villager. He's got the pasta ears, but he also has pasta sauce on his head indicating hair, with Parmesan on top, some meat freckles, and a sweater with the colors of the Italy flag. I just called him Torti being short for Tortellini. I think he turned out really cute and I'd love to have him in my town. I think he and Chadder would be good friends, lol.
Harper- I did struggle with the normal villager a bit. There were a few ideas I had, but what I thought about doing is to have her be based off of an actual bird in real life. It's a diamond dove. I've always found diamond doves to be very pretty. They have a muted color scheme, with the red around their eyes standing out. That's why Harper has red around her eyes. She has a royal bluebell on her head because while doing research, diamond doves are from Australia. Also the royal bluebell is an Australian flower. So I guess I made Harper an Australian character. I always like when Animal Crossing characters are based off of specific animals, so I wanted to have a villager like that.
Milton- Jock villagers are all about sports, exercise, and muscles. I thought, "What if I made a jock villager based off of a sport?" and thus he's a badminton eagle. I'm not really a sports person, but badminton is one of my favorite sports to play, so that's why I wanted to go with it for the design. My favorite thing about the design is the head. Milton's head looks like a birdie, and considering an eagle's head reminds me of a birdie, it couldn't be more perfect. He originally was going to have a birdie on his shirt, but I felt like it was unnecessary detail. Plus I believe people can tell what sport he's based off of just by looking at him. His name is Milton because one of my friends came up with the name, with Milton sounding close to minton, like a pun. I mean a lot of Animal Crossing villagers have punny names, so it fits. XD His design makes me wish we had mini games to play with our villagers. Milton would be ecstatic to play badminton with anyone.
Sparkle- I love magical girls, and I thought a magical girl villager who is also peppy would be the right choice. Also I chose cat because cats are REALLY popular in magical girl anime. This character was pretty easy to make considering New Horizons has magical dresses, which is perfect for her. I went with pink cause pink is the most common color for the main character in those anime (especially Precure). Can't forgot a tiara for her. At first she was going to be an all white cat, but I felt like she needed some kind of fur pattern. The brown patches work so well. I also made a wand for her because she can't be a magical girl without one. Sparkle is definitely a fun character to have if you're a magical girl fan. I can imagine Sparkle having a bunch of wands in her house. Maybe one day I'll make houses for my villagers.
Maximus- To be honest, this was the most challenging villager I've made. I knew I wanted to make a warrior villager, but I was stuck on which species and which type of warrior he should be. First I thought of a sheep, then bear, then pig, it was a mess. Then it hit me; a war horse! I've seen horses in armor, and having one as a villager would be awesome! I went with sort of a Roman warrior vibe. He's decked out in bronze armor with his own war helmet. The helmet was a bitch to design since I didn't want it to look too complex or too simple. I'm happy with it. I named him Maximus, and when I showed him to some friends, one of them thought the name Maximus was perfect. He said, and I quote, "He looks like a donkey so he's an ass. And he's cranky so he acts like an ass. And his name is part of the anatomy term for ass." So yeah, very fitting for a cranky villager. XD
Macaron- I made a villager based off of my favorite food, now here's a villager based off it one of my favorite desserts, macarons. Squirrel was literally the first animal I thought of making this villager, and I ran with it. I want her to look a little fancy while having the macaron theme. She's got a macaron hat and earrings to go with the theme. I personally love the earrings I gave her. X3 Purple is the first color I thought of, and like with squirrel, I ran with it. It's like the first thoughts of my snooty villager were meant to be, lol. I added some dark brown so she would have some sort of chocolate accent. Like a purple macaron with chocolate cream. She ended up looking like a Happy Tree Friends character, which is funny cause I actually hate Happy Tree Friends. I like the character designs tho. But yeah, named her Macaron cause well, she's macaron themed. Yeah I couldn't think of another name. I like it, to be honest.
Rivera- Yes, he is an El Tigre reference. This was completely done on purpose. Hey, if Animal Crossing can have a villager that references Velma from Scooby Doo, then I can have a villager reference an official character too. This tiger is not entirely El Tigre if he was a villager. I did go with the inverted colors like on his mask. He's got the green pac man eyes like Tigre, the scar, and his shirt having black and red with a bandana to match. I figured he'd be a smug villager cause Tigre himself is pretty smug at times. I went with the name Rivera since it comes from Manny Rivera (being El Tigre's name). If he was a real villager, I'd go out of my way to have him!
Kumi- My sisterly wolf villager. Or rather, my kumiho villager. So I planned on making a nine tailed fox villager because I like the idea of villagers being based off of mythological creatures. We got a dragon, a phoenix, and a unicorn, so why not a nine tailed fox? Well actually, she has three tails cause I didn't feel like giving her nine tails. The original intent was to make her a Japanese villager named Kumiko, but then I realized Kumiko sounds close to kumiho, which is the Korean name for these foxes. So I made her Korean and named her Kumi, short for kumiho. Kumihos in Korean mythology are portrayed as evil, but Kumi isn't like that. She'll get vicious if you try to harm her loved ones.
There you have it. I know this was a long description, but I wanted to share my process on how I made these villagers. Overall, I love how these darlings turned out. It was a really fun project to work on. Maybe I'll drawn them again someday. :>
