The Sun Chaser soared high above the clouds as the McDuck family left behind the fabled Gemini Valley, a remote area nestled between the Himalayas. It was loaded with ancient treasures from the Romans, Chinese, Tibetans, Indians, and a half dozen other civilizations, all stored in abandoned ruins that dotted the landscape. The only way to Gemini Valley was a perilous route across the skies, and no adventurer before had been able to pry the secret treasures out of the valley.
But then, no adventurer before had been Scrooge McDuck. With his great-nephews, Webby, Launchpad, and Donald Duck at his side, Scrooge was able to carve another notch in his belt, as his family was now flying away with some of Gemini Valley’s most renowned treasures, including the most famous of them all: the Sheshanaga Gem. A statue of a two-headed serpent, one half was carved out of pure ruby, the other half carved from sapphire.
The Sheshanaga Gem had caught Donald’s eye, in particular. The duck wasn’t entirely sure why, as he had seen lots of treasure and priceless artifacts just from being around Scrooge, but the Sheshanaga was particularly alluring. Tempted, he turned to the older duck.
“Uncle Scrooge, I was wondering…” Donald began.
Scrooge, hunched over a map, looked up only to roll his eyes. “Ach, oh boy. Ye only call me ‘Uncle’ when you’re trying to butter me up. What is it?”
“What?” Donald scoffed. “That’s not true!”
“I mean, kinda?” Huey, who had also been eyeing their spoils, spoke up. “The first time we heard you call him ‘Uncle’ was when you asked him to watch us before we even moved in.”
“And when you asked him to help pull your boat out of Duckburg harbor,” Louie added.
“And when you wanted to borrow one of the limos for a date,” Dewey added.
“Thanks, boys,” Donald snapped before turning back to Scrooge. “Look, I don’t often ask for any souvenirs or trinkets, so I was wondering if maybe I could take the Sheshanaga Gem for my share this time around.”
Scrooge arched his brow. “The Sheshanaga Gem is one of the main reasons we even came here. Do you have any idea what that thing is capable of?”
“Oh I know!” Webby pushed her way to the front, clutching a well-worn history book. “The Sheshanaga Gem shows the mythical King of the Naga, an ancient race of snake-men that live underground and were masters of magic! The ruby half represents the king’s power and strength, and the sapphire half shows the prosperity and wealth he gave to his people. It’s a sacred totem to the Naga people, and was supposed to imbue their leaders with amazing powers, but, but!” Webby was working herself up, gesturing wildly. “It’s said that should the two halves ever be separated, a terrible curse would be placed on whoever broke it, and powers from beyond time and space would place not just one curse, but two on the thief! Boom, double-cursed! Or something like that.”
Donald and Scrooge exchanged looks, before the older duck cleared his throat. “Yes… well, thank you, Webigail. As she said lad, it’s cursed. What would you even do with such a trinket?”
Donald looked away, shrugging. “Well, I don’t know. You have a huge collection of magical trinkets on top of your fortune, your mansion, your estates, and I have… a boat.”
“Hm.” Scrooge nodded thoughtfully. “I’ll admit lad, when ye put it like that it does sound pathe- I mean, unfair. Besides, ye did nearly get flattened by that spike trap when we got the blasted thing. Very well, the Sheshanaga is yours.”
No sooner had Scrooge said this that the entire plane shuddered violently, throwing everyone to the floor. “Launchpad!”
“Ah, sorry, Mr. McD! We hit a rough patch of fog and we may have scraped against the northern face of Mt. Neverest. Who knew they made mountains this high, right?” Launchpad called from the cockpit. “You might also want to hang on!”
The plane shuddered again, and the Sheshanaga Gem toppled from its perch. Donald lunged for it, catching it just in time. “Phew!”
A third patch of turbulence, this one more violent than the others. The groaning and scraping of metal was earsplitting, the entire plane shaking violently like it was about to burst apart at the rivets.
“Launchpad!” Scrooge shouted. “Can’t you take us higher and get us out of this blasted fog?”
“Can do, Mr. McD!” Launchpad jerked the plane’s control wheel, as the Sunchaser suddenly climbed higher in the air, the floor tilting steeply beneath everyone’s feet.
Webby barely managed to fire her grappling hook in time, clinging to the upper deck of the plane. Scrooge caught the co-pilot’s seat with his trusty cane, but Donald and the triplets were less lucky. Clutching the Sheshanaga Gem close to him, Donald hurtled towards the back of the plane, hitting the cargo bay switch.
“Level the plane, now!” Scrooge shouted.
“I’m working on it!” Launchpad grunted, putting all his strength into bringing the plane back under control.
“Uncle Scrooge! Uncle Donald!” Lewie cried out, wind rushing as the cargo bay door began to open, and he began to lose his footing. “We could use some help here!” Dewey and Louie lunged for their brother, but they weren’t strong enough to pull him back in.
The deafening gale howling around him, his nephews slipping out of the cargo bay door, Donald looked between them and his prize; it didn’t even take a second for him to make his choice. Letting go of the priceless statue, Donald rushed to Huey’s side, pulling him to safety just as Launchpad levelled the plane. Dewey punched the switch, and the cargo bay doors began to close. Then, something caught Donald’s eye- the Sheshanaga Gem was still in the plane, but rolling towards the opening.
“My gem!” Donald lunged for the serpentine statue, and his fingers just barely wrapped around one half of it; then the doors slammed shut with a resolute clang, followed by a faint snap. Pulling the Sheshanaga gem back, Donald groaned. “Aw, phooey…”
Half the Sheshanaga, torn apart by the cargo bay doors, fell back to earth, and unknown to Donald, its magic had already been cast- a subtle shift in reality placed both curses on the unluckiest duck in the McDuck line...
