Help me name this tune... I read something on the text of a MIDI track on the original file, it's from Metalgear Solid, but I didn't play that game... I found this file on my old 486 many time ago and resampled it with Melody Assistant :D
[2021-12-08] EDIT: I appear to have gotten ahold of a MIDI file that was to be sampled and released some years later by Retrogame Tributes. Story here (link).

I happen to have the PC version of Metal Gear solid, and i thought its minimum system requirements was something along the lines of a Pentium I,
i remember it running smoothly on an AMD K6-2 but i doubt it would run on a 486
aside from that, the music in the game is stored in a pcm format thats inside compressed files with some weird file extension. (they can be extracted using winrar to look inside them though :D)
all that saiid, i don't recognise this from anywhere in the game, so it must be from one of the earlier games: Metal Gear, or Snakes revenge. which more fit the time frame of your 486.
one site i know of that has lots of video game music is http://www.vgmusic.com/
the site may look a little dated (it's been around forever) but it literally has over a hundred thousand fan-sequenced midi's, you could try searching for MGS there on various consoles and compare what you hear to this.
personally, i use the site to download other peoples midis, and then study them, and sometimes learn to play songs just by looking at the piano roll. sometimes i listen to them for inspiration. and sometimes, i just use them to test my skills at making them sound realistic.

I spent much time as a child wasting time playing my NES.
and i loved every minute of it. and still have all my old games.
(who'd toss out Metroid, Contra, Megaman III, Castlevania II, Super Mario Brothers, Marble Madness, BUBBLE BOBBLE, or Kirbys Adventure?!)
i had a chance to play many great old NES games when they were still fresh, but i never even heard of solid snake till Metal Gear Solid and the PS1 came along.
and come to think of it, i've never even got a chance to beat the damn game,
even if i completely finished the VR missions, every time i try to beat MGS, my computer dies on me, my dad had it for the ps1 but someone stepped on the damn CD before i could finish it. ;_;
i'd install it again, but i have no suitable gamepad atm
...that reminds me of another good game. Siphon Filter... with its awesome Air Taser that would make your enemy's spontaneously combust... (am i a bad person for loving that thing? it was hilarious!)
