This one was a long time in coming. I had doodled up some cover art for my story The Burrows, but couldn't do much with it. I tried to clean up a snap I got of it but that was no good. So then my good bud
theredstamp offered to take my lines and clean them up, improving some things that weren't quite perfect. It's something of a collab in that respect.
Every municipality, it seems, has a lot of iconography and details, like an official rock and flower and bird. Seals are a good way to show what a place is all about, along with mottos that relate to very important ideas. So here we have The Tri-Burrows seal, formed from uniting the three individual former icons for the named burrows of Bunnyburrow, Squirrelburrow, and Predburrow (Top, Lower Right, Lower Left respectively) along with their mottos into the unified great region of the Tri-Burrows.
In Bunnyburrow's section, their main crops, as it is for all of them. A large carrot with wheat tops behind it, a large turnip, and bunched fescue. The motto "Serit Ut Aleri Saeco Prosit" is above, "One sows for the benefit of another age" (Fun fact, the state motto of North Dakota, an homage to my super good friend who is from a little town in the wilds of the frozen tundra that is South Canada, AKA North Dakota)
In Squirrelburrow's section, the tree products they're famous for. A tree there, with an apple, a peach and an acorn. Merely representative, they're nuts for nuts, and drupe fruit. "Arduus Ad Solem" "Striving toward the sun", they climb those trees over and over again.
In Predburrow's secion they have an interesting mix. Folk do need meat. So, two kinds of fish, white meat represented by a trout and red meat represented by a salmon. Plus, berries, which real life critters like foxes love. A generic berry bush is joined by two vine berries, the tomato and grapes. "Labor Omnia Vincit" "Work Conquers All". Predators have never been that well respected but they threw their backs into doing their very best, to earn the respect they always deserved. It stamped the mammals of Predburrow to practically have the idea of hard work being their ticket to respectability written on their hearts. The only construction company in the Tri-Burrows is in Predburrow, and most of the municipal workers that grade roads and maintain lines and even those who work on the Burrows-owned portions of train track are Predburrowers.
On the bottom, a little hard to see, "Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto" "The welfare of the populace should be the supreme law". This is what The Tri-Burrow sees as a guiding principle. They unified country region means nothing if it does not think of the population first. That's why the governing council was so quick to expel one of its members when they found out he was a Purist (basically a species-racist who also was strongly, even violently, opposed to interspecies relations and anyone with impure bloodlines) and then started a special election to fill the seat, even if it was a massive hassle.
It makes for a great cover for a story that's... not really a story. It's not a linear plot in the conventional sense. It has notions, but mostly just... is. It's slice-of-life to the core. Just the things happening in The Burrows.
