The Idea:
Being a fan is a simple thing be other than youself. It is fine to admire things and what not to a certain degree. But assumptions to how far people will become to be the so called "Ultimate Fan" is a completely wrong track to follow. This came to me from a recent conversation on MSN from an admirer of my work. I was flattered at first until the conversation came to a complete halt when he said, "Sometimes I feel as though the characters are in my head telling me to draw them." I then calmly without freaking out blocked him from the chat-line hoping to God he wouldn't come back. I then thought of creating an image that questions the boundaries and sanity of what it is to be a fan. This took me about a week to finish.
The Rant:
Often through times when I was part of this culture I met alot of really cool people and artist. The convos were like everyday life when you just go on with random BS. Others are what is called the oddities of this culture. Probably what you get through the vision of Shawn Keller's work. (funny stuff dude) Also it's what the media has mainly focused on through their shows and crap. CSI and Tyra will always be on the hit-list. Let's see who else wants to talk about it? Anyways some artist I have talked with (not giving any names so no asking >:I) were nice like any other regular Joe, were often known or not so much surprised to see what kind of impact their work has effected. It is to that point where the popularity spreads like a virus until it is completely consumed to the point of being known as a common household name. Most try to remain secretive to be safe from any contact of some crazed fans. Some just do it stroke their ego to gain more attention like any other whore. It is good in a sense to know your work is liked, but where there is fans, there will be fans who like it for the wrong reasons. Often there are times when fans will go to the length of making fan art. Fan art (in my opinion) is made for 3 reasons.
1. To show how appreciative they are of being a fan.
2. Being and giving it to them as a gift.
3. To get attention that leads to indignity.
There are times when gift art is meant for good reasons, and others where there is possibly no logical sense of thinking. The horror of what I saw in this sense. When I was still at DA during the time, way before the huge Virus ran amuck, I usually search through fur galleries to look for a style I could try to make for myself. There was these countless images of Warner Brother's character Minerva Mink in the same possition in many different kind of dresses. Assuming the main fact of insanity was nothing compared to the gallery of the artist. It was nothing but Minerav Mink in different kinds of dresses. IT was to a point where I needed to puke from it. I got to the point where it was best to not know how crazy people can be. Gift art to them is probably another way for them to completely spazz out fromt he response to the creators, like they recieved the Word from God. Then they would continue to hear more from them. I have dealt with stalkers and admirers to a lower magnitude. It is NOTHING compared to the artist who have a widespread name. They are the real ones who get this this (possibly) 24/7. It is what I call, "Being Victim to your own Talent". We are not Gods to any of them. We are no different from each other. We just get taken granted b/c we as people have evolved to the point where we dont take the time to appreciate artwork and just point and say, "Oooooh shiney!" >:I It with these occurances where some artist warn me of being cautious of ever trying to go to a convention without some random person trying to grope me. Then of course there are stalkers. If I'd start a war against them I would. In another sense I can't, b/c some of them are paying customers. Some are regular buyers of simple taste, the rest are for the smut.
Final Statement: The characters portrade in here are not the image of antagonizers to the fans but what my fan I had a conversation with envisioned in his head. An example of how being a fan poisioned his way of thinking. I'm not trying to point fingers but to give a lite for somebody to hold in the dark to guide the way. Being the sopposed Ultimate Fan has ruined some people in their way of life. Seek help if this happens, people will listen. People who will troll this, will only tell me my message actually worked. I will not respond and plead people who not possitive, DO NOT defend it. It will only further feed the Trolls.

back when I DID do fanart I did one lineart coloring of Raven Hunt that I edited to be nude to snap MBR's little rule on her.
Now that I have original characters and a storyline I'm writting, nothing is exceeding her picture, and the ones that come close are my three Cow Medis...who are extremily busty...the only reason they got so far.
The onlt acception is the oen of my main characters and that brought a smile to my face with over 300 views for not being porn.

Sparrow is lookin' badass, I must say, hon.
But that aside, fans are scary. So I guess I'm glad I don't have any? idk lol. No one has approached me being all OMFG IM A FAN OF YOU, MYSTI :D. As flattering as it would be, I'd still be a little scared. I myself need to learn to tone down my excitement when I meet people that I admire XD It probably terrifies them, haha.

I don't see the issue with the Minerva Mink gallery, honestly. I kept tabs on a person who drew alot of art based on the female lead from Cats Dont Dance, dressed in various fashions and such. I thought it was cute art and it was nice to see the character "living on" so to speak after the movie was done. Cripes a ton of people at my highschool were drawing Taz from Loony Tunes during the 90s. Trends hit, cute characters are created, and people put their own spin on said things. I don't see the major fault there other than you may not personally care for it.
Funny thing is, I have to agree with you there... I'm not getting any fanart and such anytime soon, but there are a few artists I've seen that have similar problems.
That being said, I don't try to draw fanart in the first place; I'm still in the process of learning to draw well. *chuckles*
All in all, the picture's actually quite good... and the rant that follows is sad but true.
