Realistic study of the Brown Hyena.
People on TLKFAA seem to think I invented this species, I DID NOT!!! I wish they would stop saying I did. These are very real animals.
Hyenas are not canines, though they bear some resemblance to dogs or wolves. They are all Hyaenidae, not Canidae.
Brown Hyenas are true scavengers, unlike the larger Spotted Hyena. Brown Hyenas live in small groups called "Clans," and also unlike their larger cousins, there is little gender dimorphism. Brown Hyenas also do not make the whooping "laugh" that their Spotted cousins are famous for.
Brown Hyenas are rare, and survive in harsh places such as Namibia.

Some people just haven't heard of them because Browns haven't been in any films or books. Shawntae Howard had never heard of them before when I asked him to draw my fursona.
Then there are the people that have no brains and think of all hyenas in terms of spotties, especially Banzai, Shenzi, and Ed. Those people seem to be the ones that keep thinking of the only speices of hyena as spotties.

Pffft, yes, but these are the people who think that The Lion King has anything to say about any kind of animal. It's people like that who start making me use terms like "real furries."
(Not that I have anything against TLK! I think it's a rocking good movie, probably one of my top-ten favourites.)

Mmm, from what I hear though (I've only been there 3 years, so I don't /really/ know myself,) from a lot of older people who are still around that the focus and calibur of the site has slipped.
Personally I don't like to think about a possible TLKFAA decline much because it makes me feel like I've missed out on something XD But that's what some "veteran" artists say.

Brown Hyenas are amazing and very real, though i have never seen that particular sub species of hyena i have seen a wild hyena in real life and they are awsome animals though they have a bad reputation, they are loving parents and fearsome hunters rather than the mere scavangers that people seem to think they are, just thought i would put out there my love of hyenas!
