It’s no secret that I am a fan of musical instruments made by Ovation. So when I found this mandolin, I couldn’t resist. This mando has a roundback lyrachord body with a design that is reminiscent of the Ovation Elite series of guitars. The top is solid sitka spruce.
The Elite-style soundholes, beautifully detailed binding, and gorgeous distressed sunburst finish are all featured in this picture. For comparison, look at this photo of my Ovation Elite guitar in THIS PHOTO.

A lot of manufacturers these days are featuring exotic woods, such as the koa used for the top of this mandolin. Instruments made of zebrawood, quilted maple, cocobolo, and others are not hard to find. A wood that looks striking doesn't always have a desirable tone though, and may not be the best choice especially for an acoustic instrument.
Yes, I've seen those on Stewart-Macdonald's site.
Choice of wood aside, there are lots of other cool ways to enhance the beauty of an instrument. Stains and other finishes, of course. Yesterday, a friend showed me a photo of a plain spruce-topped guitar that had a beautiful, striking dragon painted on it.
Not to mention my own bear guitar.
