I stopped in the music store to buy a strap for my new mandolin and, on impulse, walked through their acoustic room. That’s where I found this Seagull M4. The design is based on a mountain dulcimer, but it is made to be held like a guitar instead of on one’s lap. For the price, I couldn’t resist picking one up, making that the most expensive strap I’ve ever purchased.
The instrument is tuned to D-A-D-D with the high D strings doubled as on a dulcimer. It also has a dulcimer-style fret arrangement making it extremely simple to play something that sounds good just by fretting the high D pair. It’s lightweight and easy to take anywhere. My only beef is that there is not much clearance between the strings and the body, so a strummer like myself is going to get a lot of pick-on-body percussion.

It's a cool little rig, isn't it?
I enthusiastically agree with you about the simple, un-decorated look of it. As much as I like fancy instruments, a lot of flashy binding and inlay wouldn't look right on this. The pretty shape and the natural wood have their own beauty. I'd love to hold and try out one of these and see if I like it....

As near as I can tell, paired strings 1) add volume and 2) because they aren't tuned to EXACTLY the same frequency, have a "ringing" sort of quality as the phase between them changes.
The Seagull web site says that the instrument has a semi-gloss finish. It is actually difficult to detect any kind of finish at all.

Aaahh yes...how well I know how these innocent trips to the music store can sometimes end!
So it's a Seagull...nice! Interesting tuning.
And I agree with DaiCymru that the lack of any contrasting decoration brings out the instrument's endearing simplicity. I looks like a fun, cute little thing to hold and play. Well bought, sir!

It really is fun! And that's the point of a musical instrument after all. I enjoy putting this in a child's hands and watching them have a go at it. It's sturdy enough that short of doing a Pete Townsend impersonation, they're unlikely to damage it. I think that I may sling this over my shoulder when I go for my next bike ride and find some nice, natural spot to play it.
