Two New Teams joining in 2021!
The All-Star Break lead to a lot of big news including a load of trades around the league which will be covered later on in this edition but the main news to come out of the All-Star Break was the announcement that the FAFL was going to expand to 14 teams in 2021 with both teams taking on new market.
In a big announcement in New Zealand, Henry MacGregor would finally announce what was being speculated for a while. The Furry Australian Football League was heading to New Zealand with the introduction of the Wellington Vipers.
While MacGregor would announce the team colours and uniforms, He’d drop a bombshell. The team had already signed retired players, Cameron Greenwell and Dayna Brunskill to their roster to come out of retirement. That would not be all as he would also announce that the team had signed a big name to coach the team in their inaugural coach. Former Fremantle Coach, Kelli Jennings was coming back to coach the team after a 2 season hiatus after leaving the Fremantle Panthers. With a glitzy debut, The Vipers are going to need all the luck they can get in their first season in 2021.
Meanwhile, A few hours later in Far North Queensland. The Australian Football fraternity would feast it’s eyes on a Cazaly's Stadium adorned with sea and coral themed decorations evoking the Great Barrier Reef with smoke machines as the 1996 Miss Australia, Christie Foster came out and announced that the 14th FAFL franchise would be based in the city of Cairns. The team were to be known as the Cairns Corals. Basing their identity around the nearby Great Barrier Reef.
While Cairns have yet to sign anyone to the team, They did announce their inaugural coach. Former Adelaide Butcherbirds Player, Timmerie Bryant. Both Foster and Bryant were very enthusiastic about the Corals and the promise & potential that the team would have. The leopard and Red-Tail Hawk that the launch of the team is the start of a long partnership.
Both teams will be involved in an Expansion Draft at the beginning of the off-season and we wish both teams the very best as they get ready to join the FAFL in 2021.
