Okay... I mentioned Java a while back, but have never put one of him up, so now it's his turn in the spotlight!
Java is the most gentle monster of a tiger you could every possibly meet! He's probably around 800lbs, and stands about 4'2" at the shoulder. If he stands up on hind legs, he clears 9-ft. He's basically a big, giant bundle of love and affection, and he's one of the more social tigers I've worked with. Java's mostly Siberian (hence his sheer size) but is probably a Bengal/Siberian mutt.
Java is a real talker. If you've never heard "tiger talk" then this is the next Feline Trivia thingie for you: if you remember the character Chewbacca from the Star Wars series, and the Wookies in general, all of their speaking throughout the films is recorded "tiger talk". Java talks a lot. In fact, he could probably accused of babbling. He has a lot to say. :)
Like any social cat, Java loves attention and is known for lumbering all the way across the cage, and then flopping down against the fence right in front of you so you can put those dextrous fingers to work, massaging through his thick fur and into his shoulders and neck. He also loves to lick hands, for those that are daring to put their palms up against the cage wire. Most folks aren't prepared to have the wet, 20-grit sandpaper rasp quite so solidly against their hands.
Overall, Java is a truly lovable goofball, that's just a big bundle of joy and warmth. He's the kind of tiger that you might be having a really horrible day, and if you wander over to him, and spend a bit of time with him, the worries of the world just melt away. Five minutes with him, and things just aren't so bad anymore.
So this is Java. See how he smiles! It's not the best pic of Java, but it's certainly a good one to introduce him with!
This picture was taken 03-Jul-03. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and the EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens. The original was taken at full frame of 3072x2048x24b, ISO eqv 400, 1/750 shutter, f/4.5. This image was rotated and then cropped a little and shrunken down for space conservation.

We'd thrown a big log into his cage, and like with any kitty, big or small, having a new toy to play with is the more grand thing in the universe!
I've always found it both sobering and amusing that for a log that takes two people to haul into the cage, they can bat it around like a ping-pong ball with one forepaw.
Sends a shivver up the spine!

I have lotsa tiger-movie trivia! There's actually lots of tiger sounds in the movie "Two Brothers". It's a silly movie and horribly anthropomorphic, (typical of that director) but aside from the total biologist perspective, it was a very well done film with good acting. Some of the tiger sounds were inappropriately placed, but they were still authentic sounds, nonetheless.
Jean-Jacques Annaud is a French-Canadian filmmaker that's done some truly monumental films, IMHO. He did indeed do "The Bear", but I honestly couldn't watch it. It was just too silly. Great animal actors, and a great story, but I'm too much of a wildlife biologist to appreciate it. It was a film about bears which I likes, but the story turned them into "human creatures in bear suits" which I didn't like. Bears reason like bears, and these reasoned like humans. Anyway, forgive my tangent there.
He's also done some more well-know works that people don't usually associate with him, such as "The Name of the Rose" with Sean Connery and Christian Slater, and even "Seven Years in Tibet" with Brad Pitt. I found both to be incredible films.
All his films have a lot of heart and depths of spirit and meaning and are full of emotion. I think that's why I like his films.
'Scuse the babbling. I'll quit now! :)

Hahaha I saw in the name of the Rose I had no idea that was him! I haven't seen the Tibet one however. You also right about the bear, I think when I saw it as a kid I did not understand it, and as I got older I did understand it more and it was very fun. I haven't seen it in a while so It would probably seem a little dated now. Two Brothers was better but I also like Guy Pierce a lot! Not just him, but two cute baby tigers are just awesome!
"Seven Years in Tibet" was a very good film. It was a fine story and well worth seeing.
Guy Pierce did an awesome job in "Two Brothers". The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the fact that they used 22 different tiger kittens in it, which means that now there 22 more tigers in captivity that are going to have to be cared for, long after the film is forgotten. :( But I still liked the film.

I'd be silly enough to stick my hand into the cage ;)...unless he gave me the particular look that warned me otherwise. What a sweet face, I could see his gentle demeanor just through the expression in the picture, and your description just went a long way to confirm it. What a simply spectacular animal.
PS...if you do need someone lend an ear for venting of ongoing troubles with the sanctuary...truly feel free to drop me an e-mail. I know truly sometimes, just having someone listen goes a long way to help at least break the tension building within. Take care of yourself sir Mick, keep your chin up! I will be keeping good thoughts for you.

I'm glad you got the warm and fussy feelings from Java, even through the picture.
As far as the compound woes, I might do that. :) I can't begind to describe what a burden it is on me to be separated from my "sons" and the rest of the animals for such a horrible reason, but that's just the nature of the Director, unfortunately. In the "animal community", she is one of the most universally hated. I know why now. :(

(shasta grins) Well, having worked with him from the time he was just a little tyke and I could carry him around in my arms, it's more been the fun of watching the little guy grow up in to a big, strong, strapping, beast of a tiger!
In my mind though, Java will always be the little that I could carry around when he got scared. :)

Usually, that's very true, especially if the animals has a deviant streak. In Java's case, it's all about the attention.
Java's just so totally social, I think if you just ignored him for a day, he'd curl up into the corner of his cage, go into convulsions, and then die. Of course, he'll never have to worry about that, 'cuz even tho' he's as big as he is, most people totally fall in love with him the instant they see him.

Tiger Magic is really something, isn't it? (:
I've fallen in love with the Siberian Whites... beautiful animals, but then they all are. Tigers are special.

Most Certainly!
Forgive me for sharing another feline trivia: the heterozygous (white tiger) gene is actually native to the Bengal sub-species of tiger, rather than the Siberian, although mankind has bred it into Siberian bloodlines in captivity. Even so, most of the white tigers in zoos and the like are entirely Bengal. Just in case you're curious. :)

Sir Wookiee: I have never had any trouble actually being in the cage with Java, as he was mostly a big Labrador with a orange coat and stripes. He was a great walker out on a leash.
In truth, I haven't been in the cage with him in several years, as cats can be territorial, and it gets a bit unpredictable as to how they might respond, even when they know you well. Typically, it is simply not prudent to take the risk, so I haven't. So now, the petting is only done thru the cage wire, as even walks got to be a problem. I never felt that Java would have done anything, but with him being some 25x my strength, it just wasn't safe to walk him without a "backup" being handy, and most volunteers just aren't quite that crazy. :) Oh well.
Java is still, will always be one of my most favorite tigers I've ever worked with. :)

Indeed! I wish I could just brain-dump what I feel to everyone I meet. I cannot begin to describe what a contentment I feel inside to work closely with these animals.
That's really part of what I try to accomplish here on FA: sharing the animals with everyone, so people can enjoy them as much as I do.
Thanx again for your wonderful comments!

Hiya Sir Sable. Glad to see you're still around. Hope the Army-Life is doing you well. :) I'm still Navy, tho silly-villian now. Thanx for the fave and the comments. :) Are you still on SL? if so, look me up sometime. I'm "Kenti Rau" as my main, and "Drifter Clawtooth" and "Macumba Petrov" as alternates (representing my sons, of course.) I'm usually in the Tiger or Moma regions, which are right next door to one another, on the oooooooold continent. Maybe I'll see you around. :) Take care and stay safe! Laters!
I am still around in SL; as both my main,(Sable Scribe) and my alt (Alexei Glenwalker). Sable has been transformed into a beautiful femal ebat Mistress while Alexei is my Siberian Tiger/Tygard Thel male. i tend to be at Conspiracy Isle at The Feline COnspiracy, dacing my life away. Hoep to see you soon.
