Lately I've been thinking the ideal "happy ending" for Patch after the adventuring ends and the party goes their separate ways, he will continue to live quietly in the woods, visit his friends as he grows old, and then in death become a sort of forest guardian spirit. The kind whose main purpose is to protect life and the natural order in the woods. But possibly also the kind who gets just a little bit loopy as centuries pass and imbues people with animal spirits as punishment for transgressions. Or as gifts in return for good deeds! I did say "loopy."
