Actually the eyepatch wasn't just to "protect" an eye as it was to ensure when moving from the deck to the hold they weren't blind for longer then 2-3 minutes. Speed was a pirate's biggest advantage. So when they went down stairs, they'd switch their patch to their "light eye" exposing their dark eye. It allowed them to see and move quickly. Then back up stairs they'd switch it around. It's how you could tell which sea farin folk were pirates after a few good decades, one eye was always squinting. The other was normal but, looked wide
