Downtown Sylva as a full shot. I was trying to tell a story with this photo... the statue in the lower corner and the changing world above, the turmoil and strife in the country today... Change is painful, Change is important.... I don;t want to confuse anyone, no statue is worth a life, but we shouldn't try and forget the past... always remember where we come from and how much further we have to go.

I will have to disagree. Those who seek to destroy history hold no place in our society. Those who seek to wrap our checkered and sometimes dark past up in pretty little bows will find it impossible. Those who tear down statues must be held accountable. Statues are as much a part of our history as our national parks and historic markers. Battlegrounds of the Civil War should be held as sacred, not developed over. Sites of indian or settler massacres should be remembered and preserved. I am one of perhaps a select few people who own a history text book. If we delete our past, if we say everything was rosy when it wasn't, or indeed, if we forsake and forget those that gave their lives on either side of any conflict, it cheapens and renders their complete sacrifice null and void. We are, as the song says, "Dust In The Wind." People are transient. Our lives are transient. Our time here on this world is precious, but in the end, we are watches without replaceable batteries. Once our time is up, that's it.
This is why I hold markers, monuments, physical items, in such high regard. Shouldn't we be caretakers for these items? If it is truly deemed racist and offensive, why not remove it properly and take it to a special museum. A place where we can add signs, add context. That these statues were important for their time. That remembering them and their context, is vital to keeping history from repeating itself. That malcontents would topple and deface statues of any sort is proof that our history, our heritage, good and bad, needs to be defended. Perhaps, in some cases, with deadly force.

Like I said above, always remember. I'd never tear a statue down without also having a place to take that statue for it to be remembered. Our history is full of turmoil, we should remember exactly who we are, and why things happened they way they did. How we got here. Context is important, and an honest accounting of what it all means. If they have to come down because as I said, no statue is worth a life, they should still be placed somewhere so people can remember.
