Making a picture - Step Five
and this is midway into the coloring process. It looks like I just slopped over all those blues and purples in black, but I actually do have a nefarious plan which you can mostly see forming on the face at the moment.
My secret weapon is turpentine. I smear the image in colored pencils and then use a paper blender stick (I think it's called a 'butt') dipped in turpentine to break down the wax and gently blend the colors up. With the undercoat of marker color now muted into a soft hint of what it once was, I'm able to round out the image a bit more.
I will use whatever tools are available to me as well. This image has markers, colored pencils, turpentine, gelpens, and watercolor pencil used on it. I never use the watercolor pencils for actual watercolor effects, but I love how the pencils tend to layer color on somewhat thickly, giving me a very specific coloring effect I need in a few places.
The final picture won't be in scraps.
