I'm pretty sure in that AD&D it would be transmutation/alteration.. but I forget for 3.5. But not so much alchemy. Maybe.
But I guess I ultimately default to it's pretend so if alchemy makes you happy, it can be alchemy.. but he's still a red dragon, not a gold one.
Every definition that I see has to do with "Alchemy, derived from the Arabic word al-kimia (الكيمياء), is both a philosophy and an ancient practice focused on the attempt to change base metals into gold, investigating the preparation of the "elixir of longevity", and achieving ultimate wisdom, involving the improvement of the alchemist as well as the making of several substances described as possessing unusual properties.[1] The practical aspect of alchemy generated the basics of modern inorganic chemistry, namely concerning procedures, equipment and the identification and use of many current substances." or something similar, so I am thinking that it would probably fall under the scope of transmutation, but I suppose that transmutation could fall under the scope of alchemy but I would probably not do it that way.
Most of the scope I see discussed is the lead into gold, or the making of elixirs and the pursuit of the philosophers stone.
Also I think in part I was thinking of level progression and that I would generally have an alchemist progress from some sort of chemist type character (ala that one starting class in Final Fantasy Tactics), whereas mages is.. um.. mages! I would have to look through some D&D stuff and maybe do more googling than I care to to further figure out what the prestige class for an alchemist in D&D would be. The guys who change shape the most though are Wild Form Druids, which... is something else entirely, so I don't know.
Or for another example, the contrast between Prof Snape (potion teacher, closer to alchemy) and Prof McGonagall being the transmutation teacher which is more what this is.
Again, _maybe_. It is all pretend, so really you could make up whatever reason you are most happy with and Shay who's character it is may have a different take on it than I. My reasons as you can see are elaborate and silly. And ultimately my answer is still PaintTool SAI.
I'm glad people still enjoy some of the older stuff.
