Since there's some interest in this sort of stuff, even all these years later, here's a "master post" of sorts I made for the Possum County Country Diner back in 2015. This is the first time I showed what the restaurant looks like, both an exterior shot and a map of the interior, as well as this being the only time all nine of the characters appeared together in the same picture.
It's still a bit heavy on FNAF references, while I was in the process of developing them into their own thing, a bit of that influence still remained a part of them--and still does. Some of the information does conflict slightly with later developments, but this is "official" documentation. After all, you wouldn't advertise that you're using surplus military robots you bought from a paramilitary organization trying to liquidate some assets, you'd say you "specifically commissioned" some "incredibly advanced" animatronic mascots.
Unfortunately, it seems this was the last major Possum County thing I really did, as my attention shifted to other projects, but I continued to draw these guys off and on for years to come.

Yeah, this was something I remember spending a lot of time on back in the day! There's a bit of asset-flipping with some of the character art, but I think this is a pretty good way to present some of the lore and history.
(If only I could get this motivated to make ref sheets and stuff for ANY of my other characters, species, worlds, vehicles... anything else I draw, really!)

That is the problem I run into a lot, too. I have a LOT of characters, I have general ideas how I want them to go, but having the details all worked out and figuring out how to make it all fit together gets challenging sometimes. And then there's the retconning... I'm actually afraid to cement too many things as canon because my mind changes or I have new ideas that I think are better than what I currently have in place. Just going through all this old art has made me do that a bit, there's a couple things that were canon in 2015 that I've kinda quietly decided just aren't anymore.
Oh, and while I'm fine drawing characters in the same poses over and over, the moment it's "draw the same character twice in the same pose but from different angles to make a refsheet" my motivation is nowhere to be found.

i know for me, if i force myself to start writing up a bio, it gets easier as I go! like, the words/ideas start to flow pretty well. and it feels so good once you have a page of info to look back on~
dont even get me started on ref sheets! suuuch a drag, i hate doing them, even for my own ocs Xb
the struggle is real

That's very true, it's like how I am with comments vs. replies--I am an awkward and introverted person that rarely comments because I don't know *how*, but give me something to reply to and that opens the floodgates pretty quick! (You seem very friendly and patient and at some point I will come comment on your art as well since you *know* I'm a dork by now.)
A lot of my characters are sort of in flux, and I draw them at various points in their lives sometimes so deciding *which* point to base a bio on could be tricky for some, but it's something I've been very aware I need to do for a while now. I love dropping tidbits of lore and backstory in descriptions, it's probably just a matter of putting it all in one spot.
Maybe I should start with descriptions of species and locations first, to get the hang of it, before doing character bios... it might help make things easier for viewers (and myself) to have the basics of what world is home to what species, roughly where it sits in the galaxy, what it's like there and how the species there interact with each other and their neighboring worlds. Stuff like that.
I'm SO glad I'm not the only artist that hates drawing ref sheets! I mean, it might just be as simple as taking some character art and putting it on a background with a color key and some basic statistics, but to have a *good* one you have to actually put in effort but it's not the fun kind of effort.
I find it easier to link a few examples of the character from my gallery, which will often include different poses, maybe different outfits, and give a feel for their personality. A lot of people are able to work with that, myself included, since it's more about having visual reference than some sort of standardized reference sheet I suppose.

I love the way you reply! you always sprinkle in all kinds of fun info
I definitely understand what you mean, you have so much art, I can imagine you might even forget your own ideas in the mix. what are the characters you're currently into?
OH have you ever thought about making playlists or moodboards for OCs? that stuff can be such fun inspiration. and do all your characters exist in the same universe? thats one thing i always struggle on deciding!
IKR!! refs already suck, let alone when you're like me and can't help but have fluid designs. what a pain !
art fight has given me the push i needed to start making some refs anyway~

Thanks! At some point I will learn to initiate conversation as well.
Right now I'm taking a bit of a break from art to catch up my gallery here, and on Weasyl. Honestly, for several years, I was pretty much forcing myself to have something new to post on DA every day to keep my page active, which isn't too hard if I have ideas and free time, maybe finish two or even three things in a day sometimes--but the burnout is REAL. My most recent drawings have mostly been "chubby characters in underwear" stuff, bit of Skunk Boy/Skunkdog, Domingo, couple newer characters I designed recently, and a spaceship or two.
I gotta ask, what's a "moodboard"? I think I've seen those on occasion, they seem to be collages of things that sorta relate to a character's aesthetics and personality.
My characters do all exist in the same universe, there's a whole galaxy for them to inhabit and a few different planets where stuff happens. From an artist perspective, it means I can keep things in mental containers, but if I do want things to cross over all that needs to happen is the inclusion of a spaceship or something. Since some of my characters already do routinely travel from planet to planet, at least in their interstellar neighborhoods, it's not a big deal. Just some groups are further along in their space-faring capabilities than others.
I guess at some point I should at least try to make refs for my sona characters, but I'm the sort of person that would set out to draw Dominic Mephitto in both of his forms and provide color keys and all, but wind up with a detailed reference sheet including an in-depth biography for some character I drew once in 2014 instead.

burnout is killer, I almost completely gave up on art as a hobby! im glad i was able to get back into it though, and im glad you still draw as well!
that's exactly what a moodboard is! I use pinterest to make mine, its soo much fun :D
ooo space stuff, i like the sound of that~ do you know how many characters you have total?

Part of the reason I'm posting so much to FA is honestly as a distraction from burnout, I was pretty close to giving up on art entirely too but I have managed to at least finish a couple things over the past few weeks. It really is time for me to stop trying to keep daily content coming, especially with DA's traffic taking a nose-dive lately.
Ah, I see! I thought there was way more to the whole mood board thing, but I tend to overthink things like that.
As for how many characters I have, I have never counted and I'm honestly afraid to. Then I'd have to decide what constitutes a "character", since I have some one-off designs I haven't touched in years that have names and a tiny bit of development to them despite only ever appearing once, and I have nameless one-off designs that have appeared once or twice, random critters, and so on. I'd guess it's somewhere in the 100-150 range, though, assuming we count any named character or design that's shown up at least once that seems to have some sort of development, or potential for development beyond "look I drew a thing lol". Maybe I *should* take count.

I hope the burnout fades completely! at least for me, easing back into the hobby once I felt rested was really nice. my main inspiration tbh was doing fanart, and it just grew from there
you arent alone in having that many characters though, i even know one person who easily has over 1,000! they count small designs/one off characters of course. on TH I see a lot of categories where people put all the loose characters in, the ones without any development. everybody has their own embarrassing collection of under developed OCs Xb

It's fading a bit, honestly, going back to all the old art and looking at what I was doing when I was having a bit more fun and trying new things has helped a lot, as has rediscovering old ideas I should play with again, things I want to update, a couple things that are due for redrawing now that I've had a few years to improve... I guess I just need to learn to accept that there will be days, weeks, or even a month here and there when the creativity is tapped out, and not let my frustration with that circle back and form a vicious cycle.
I will definitely have to count sometime! I'm not entirely sure Toyhouse is something I'd have use for but it might come in handy at some point--maybe that can be my next project when I get FA and Weasyl caught up to where I am on DA and I start posting to all three sites simultaneously. I did recently download "Postybird" but I haven't tried it yet, I know that does scheduled submissions too (so long, DA premium membership, that was your only useful perk!), just gotta decide if I trust it with login credentials and see if it actually works. The roommate demonstrated it for me though with a recent commission he was reposting and it posted to FA and InkBunny just fine for him.
At least I'm far from the only character hoarder! Part of the fun of having underused designs is, it's basically like free adoptables sometimes, lol.

very well said! I know lots of people get bummed about lack of feedback, and about 'improving'. it's a nasty cycle most artists fall into at some point. But really, art is a hobby! just draw what you like, what's fun, and if it gets to be too stressful? then there's always the option to take a break ^u^
I've heard pillowfort is a nice idea, kind of like tumblr x twitter x DA? hell, posting art on instagram is an option also. I was gonna test the waters myself so hopefully, in a little while, we'll both be getting a bigger following :3
Toyhouse also has a really fun forum section, full of art games, character games, discussions, really all kinds of fun stuff.

I gotta be honest... I let the "social media mentality" get to me for a while, in terms of engagement and feedback, that's how I found a sense of validation I was lacking elsewhere. And I think that really led to some serious burnout, since at times I was so worried about having things to stuff into the scheduled submit queue to keep my gallery "active" and "relevant" that I found myself just sorta creating content for content's sake, and getting frustrated when I couldn't squeeze something out.
On the plus side, though, that did really help me improve, because drawing became a nearly daily activity! It's just clear, especially in the art from 2016 onward, that a lot of what I was doing was more "activity feed fodder" cranked out to chase that validation and attention.
I think I checked out Pillowfort when it was first presented as a possible alternative for Eclipse, but it just wasn't my style. It reminded me a bit too much of Tumblr and I never really had an interest in using Tumblr so... I guess I'm just not the target demographic.
As for Instagram, that's far too "social media" for me, not to mention I don't have a smartphone (and Facebook creeps me TF out with all its snooping and tracking). You'll have to let me know if it works out for you, though!
I may have to check out Toyhouse at some point though! What I liked about DA was that it was very open and accessible, anybody at any skill level could post there, and the functionality was like a hybrid between an image host and a social media site. That's probably what I'm liking about FA as well, it's that same sort of niche as far as site design and functionality goes.

very understandable, it's so easy to get wrapped up into something like that. I'm glad things seem to be different now! I hope you can continue to have a more, stress free connection to your work. getting feedback is always really nice, if i didnt have my little circle of pals on here to regularly communicate with, the hobby wouldn't feel half as fun. but personally i have also come along way. Especially compared to my younger years, when I'd throw tantrums due to lack of comments lol
facebook really is weird, but its useful for keeping contact with family! idk why, but all my extended family uses it and NOTHING else. despite all the privacy drama! FA is great but, so far from perfect. its so overrun with porn, and iv heard some REAL shady stuff about the staff members. But I already worked so hard to get a start here, it feels weird to leave it behind u_u
The main clique I see on TH is people who are into closed species, but I just avoid that area of the forums. The rest is really nice!! Though it sucks that ppl still need to use codes to sign up? and you cant search the forums using keywords unless you have a premium account. which is so dumb!!

I guess I needed to quit cold-turkey, but it wasn't by choice--the new DA update killed traffic to the site, and Weasyl is already slow, and I'm new to FA so I'm not famous/infamous enough to get more than 5 faves on non-fetish art anyways lol.
I have to agree, it's better to have a handful of interested people to chat with--on DA I have "1.3k" watchers (like all generic social media sites, actual numbers aren't a thing there anymore) but I only ever hear from, like, 15 of them with any frequency? So I have an engagement rate of like 1% of my watcher base.
You listed off ALL the reasons I didn't want to join here until it sorta became a necessity. It seems to be really hard to gain any traction if you don't draw porn (or, you might be okay if you're an exclusively commission artist that has dozens of other accounts dedicated to reposting your work to drive traffic to your page), and I heard a lot of bad things about the admins and site security. BUT, the site works quite well compared to what I remember it being like a few years back, and is light-years ahead of DA in functionality now.
Closed species is a rant I could go on but maybe I should save that for another time, or a random "hey let's chat and rant" journal/thread or something. I had a friend on DA complaining they couldn't afford whatever candy-covered dog thing was trendy back in 2017 because it was 300 bucks--as much as I paid for my silver Pontiac. And a car can get you to and from work so it's an investment that can pay for itself!

man ive been here for what feels like AGES and I usually only get a few favs myself Xb oh well!
I think that's normal, unless you're a SUPER trendy artist. Like the meme makers from youtube! they're DA pages are kickin wild
yah its an easy place to get used to. But I am on the hunt constantly trying to find a better place. if I ever have luck finding one I'll definitely try to remember to share it with you!
ooo i definitely want to hear that rant ~

People seem to suggest Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram a lot, but none of those are really "art sites" and they're just not for me. People on DA are stanning two new sites that are basically Discord servers and will probably never actually become sites in their own right, but if I've stuck with Weasyl this long (ignore the time I forgot about the site for five years lol) I wouldn't necessarily turn my nose up at a new clone of the old DA. The problem is, my time is limited since I still have a job, I have to eat and sleep, and I need to find time to make more art to post on the sites, meaning there's less time to participate in each individual site the more I wind up on.
(Also at some point I'd like to post a journal plugging for some of my friends since I have a couple that joined recently, I'll shout you out too! I'm thinking something in the context of "hey recommend me some people to watch" to get some engagement going.)
It seems like to gain any traction on any site, you either need to already be a popular artist, be friends with a popular artist, or post a LOT of NSFW content. DA, Weasyl, FA... things like skill and effort and personality don't seem to matter all that much. It's just like high school all over again.
OH GOD THE CLOSED SPECIES RANT. Let's start by how 99% of them aren't anything original--they're, like, dogs with candy colors and candy pieces stuck to them, or dogs with unusual tails, or something that I could easily draw by accident when I'm just doodling random creatures... which leads to the next point, DRAMA. That might have just been a DA thing but people took that stuff way too seriously and would go after people for "not drawing it right" or drawing something that just looked similar, or if some 12-year-old saw the Candy Dogs and thought they were cool and just drew one without understanding closed species stans, god have mercy on them.
And then the PRICE. You're paying sometimes hundreds of dollars just to *license* a design from a popular artist. You don't have creative control, you have to abide by all their rules and stuff, there's approval processes and all sorts of requirements just to draw a dog with a fish tail? And people willingly pay 50, 100, 200, 300 or more dollars for the privilege? HARD PASS.
I'm not sure if that's as big a thing on FA as it was on DA, though. That site just seemed to breed that sort of drama and stupidity. I remember hearing about some "Angel Dragon" thing being DA levels of closed species fuckery on here a couple years ago though. I had no involvement in this closed species stuff whatsoever but the drama still found me because a couple of my friends were into it and always posting journals and statuses about how they needed to raise like 300 dollars to buy some design they wanted and sometimes I just wanted to say "hey I'll sell you one of mine I never use for like five bucks or trade it for some art", but none of my unused designs matched the current trends...

hey if you find a DA clone you better show it to me!! I'd kill for a site like that. As far as socialization goes, thats where discord SHINES. Love being able to keep in touch with so many people so easily. The servers and functions themselves do confuse me a bit if im honest Xb
a journal to plug other artists is a really sweet idea! I'd be flattered to be on the list <3
how are you liking FA so far? have you gotten up a nice following? One major thing that helped me was, putting out the attention that I want for myself. I comment and fav regularly, and it helps a lot. Builds friendships and whatnot
gosh I avoid closed species stuff cause, it is full of drama. but it sounds just as silly as I remember :']
someone put it well once, pointing out that you cant copyright certain character features. like.. have dog half horse species.. you cant just say you own that concept. the hype behind them is something i ill never understand! your rant about it is so entertaining lol

Oh no, we've reached that point where the comments are getting all scrunched up!
If I find a good DA clone I'll probably be over there, filling it up with my old art just like I did to Weasyl and FA--and promoting it so people follow me there for the same content they already got!
I have Discord but I rarely use it... NO idea what a "Discord Server" even is if I'm being honest, or what it has to do with art, but I guess they can be set up with channels and stuff? I was part of one that a friend of mine set up for his Minecraft server but not much happened there, he had some sort of "official announcement" channel for when he did updates and stuff, and then a chat channel for random BSing but it didn't see too much use.
So far, I like FA far more than I expected to! I've always struggled with the "social interaction" aspect though because I'm shy about commenting (and I made some really stupid comments in the past so now I would rather *not* do that) and a bit selective about faves/watches, but I am working on that! Do people here expect to be thanked for watches/faves or is it like DA where that was generally regarded as spam? Seems like the off times I do thank someone here I don't get any sort of response back so I'm guessing people aren't that interested in those generic comments.
Maybe I need to start doing rant journals or something lol but you can probably tell I think the whole concept is kinda stupid. Like, over half of my character designs could probably be claimed as "closed species" just because they're not generic animals, but I'm not out here telling anybody they *can't* draw a hyena/alligator guy because that's what my Ridgebacks sorta are or they can't give their wolf big-ass Digimon teeth because that's how I draw my Geoterran Wolves or drawing a human with a skunk tail is STEALING MY FURSONA GIVE IT BACK.
Watch me get comments eventually accusing me of copying some closed species or something tho lol it happened on DA before, along with people getting mad at me because my FNAF fan characters have generic names--I had THREE people complain about Harry Horse because he's a generic brown horse with a generic alliterative name, and my first art of him was posted before theirs so maybe I should be the one accusing them of "character theft" and telling them to change it?

yeah discord server are basically group chats. They come in all flavors, some are for games, some are for fandoms, some are for art, etc
oh yeah people do NOT like being thanked for favs/watches! some people dont even want ANY shouts. but if they feel that way they usually put a message in the shouts about it.
The funny thing is about species is.. who cares if you do 'steal' the idea? I know it's in poor taste but. legit the worse outcome is usually that you'll be banned from the species. and if you arent gonna participate in the first place, being banned wont be an issue lol
man thats so rude, im surprised they'd lunge at you over that. how lame
