Oh man, I love this design! Coming from 3.5/pathfinder (and not playing or playing with any monks, with the exception of one absolutely terrifying grapple monk that we hired during a campaign) I didn't know they could use tridents without taking some penalties to their monk abilities?

I played him in 5e, I took the background Gladiator to match the pit fighter idea, and it gives you an exotic weapon to be proficient with. At the time of making the character, the unearthed arcana had published a few buff updates to monks, which allowed you to pick what weapon you considered to be a monk weapon, so seeing as I was proficient with tridents, I made that part of his "martial arts style". :D

Oh nice, that's awesome! I think one of the reasons I shy away from monks (and Paladins) is because of how limiting some of the rules around them can get, so it's neat to see that they've expanded the ability to customize the class like that.

I really like this design, it fits the pit fighter theme but also gives me pirate vibes. Either way I like it!
