If we exclude all the biased reasoning (non-parallel shadow type...) and concentrate only on the use of fake...
Most of them are in good faith. He really believes in his images. But as he doesn't verify the origin of his images, he propagates them.
It's a pity for the images that are "SFX tests" that were diverted from their original purpose and ironic when they were created with the intention of making joke of this community.
The real problem is: he continues to use it and even with the proof in front of his eyes.
That's for the vast majority, because there are always clever people who will voluntarily create images for their: Either for the glory to found/seen exclusive images (just for the feeling of being important and not anonymous), or to voluntarily increase their influence and importance in it (scam).
But fortunately it's much rarer. And the second one even more.

that reminds me of the image of a murrican battle helicopter, where some soldiers are standing inside looking out, seemingly yelling at other people outside in clothes you could take for middle east or asia if you like... and the medias use the whole image, or parts thereof of the upper, lower, or other part for their own shortcomings. aka, creating drama when there was never a drama to begin with.
