I guess third times the charm. After finally making it through that wind tunnel, I was too exhausted to put up a fight as the buffing disks and hoses descended to give me the shine of a lifetime. It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, it was somewhere in between a blanket out of the dryer and a pleasant massage.
At the very least, I can literally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
