the difference is 100% references. i've always felt like drawing was too easy if i could look at what i wanted to draw, but my artist friends say that's stupid so i've started to change my ways.

watcha mean? any tips? i usually just trace construction lines over it and then reference that for my own actual sketch

That's good! My way of using them is kind of trippy and takes me too much time for me, but I pretty much try to divide it on geometrical parts just to understand the volume and try to make it look like something you could touch?
