Up here in Canadaland, the number one killer in the reserves and aboriginal communities is suicide. We constantly have dances to honor the memory of the "Suicide Trail" and those who have left becuase of it. This piece not only reflects all these sentiments, but the poem as well is as moving as a mountain- did you write it yourself?
Aside from alcohol-related deaths, that's numero uno here too for the rezs. :[
It was a traditional tanka, so in the Japanese rhyme scheme it makes sense - my friend helped me find it in a old collection of the poems since I dunno a lick of Japanese, but it was pretty appropriate I thought.
