Off the Calian Port town of Omberg
Sundown
The South Dakota lay quietly at anchor off the coast while the only thing that could be seen moving was the radar as it kept up its silent vidual, piercing the darkness searching for threats that could endanger the ship and its crew. The lights of Omberg twinkled in the distance but the only sound that reached the ship was the lapping of waves against the hull and the occasional Gull circling the ship.
Captain Pike leaned on the bridge wing railing and stared across the calm waters at the glittering lights of the town and desperately tried to push the fact that they were only a twenty miles from the border between Calia and the Horde controlled territory. She paced the Bridge wing and scanned the horizon with her binoculars as if she had a hope of spotting any attack before the radar did.
Entering the Bridge again she looked at her orders and shook her head before turning over the Bridge to her relief and retiring for dinner with her first officer, Commander Vidi Athlon, a grey wolf who had served on many missions with her on the South Dakota and was soon to be offered his own command and scuttlebutt had it that he was first in line for the command of the MCFS Guam, a Refitted Alaska class cruiser, and while she was saddened by the fact that she could be losing her best officer she knew that the Guam would be getting the best Officer they could ask for. The mood aboard was tense as all on board knew how close they were to horde territory and to them, being this close and anchored felt very wrong. The tension was such that you could cut it with a knife and the Captain was glad when she stepped into the officers dining area.
As she ate she discussed their orders with Vidi, who agreed that something was going on that they were not being told about.
“Proceed to Omberg, Anchor and await the arrival of the MCFS Indiana , hold position until further orders” Captain Pike read aloud,” whenever command gets cryptic I know we are in for a fight.”
During the night their suspicions were confirmed when the Indiana arrived in the company of the entire Battleship fleet along with a number of other vessels, mostly cruisers. Helicopters buzzed overhead in the dawns light as Captain Pike entered the bridge where Commander Athlon was already looking at the massed fleet around them through his binoculars,” Looks like you were right Captain, something is definitely up”
The Captain picked up the Binoculars and scanned the ships around her battlewagon and read out the names.
“They have sent us the Battleships Indiana, Washington, Colorado, Vanguard, Iowa and Wisconsin as well as the Carriers Melbourne, Kearsarge and Saratoga the helicopter carrier Sydney and the Cruisers Alaska, Guam, Pittsburgh, Toledo, Los Angeles, Quincy and Macon” she said in disbelief,” the Helena and the Bremerton are here too.”
Vidi lowered his binoculars and looked at the Captain,” they have sortied almost all of the ‘heavies’ to join us.......This is the largest show of force ever amassed by us.”
“And the largest they have ever seen” the Captain remarked, turning her binoculars towards the shore. The cliffs were lined with locals watching the massive armada of floating metal fortresses and their strange flying machines that buzzed by without the aid of wings.
Within an hour all the captains were sitting in the Briefing room aboard the Saratoga and waiting while an officer from Military Intelligence who entered with a large folder under his left arm which he placed on the table before him before addressing the officers before him.
“As you know the Horde has been quiet recently and we believe that this is due to a large build up of troops and equipment for a push on our positions inside Calian Territory. These recon photos show that they are massing large numbers or soldiers and dragons as well as amassing a large fleet of ships all up and down the coast for what is believed to be a massive coordinated strike that is intended to catch us by surprise and smash us.”
He passed the photos around and continued as the officers looked at them, noting the massive numbers of troops that were within easy reach of the South Dakota’s big guns.
“Our plan is for your taskforce to sail into range and decimate everything at the coordinates, also any ships you encounter on the way are targets as well, sink everything you come across.”
He rambled on for another two hours before he finally flew back to Command and gave the Captains a chance to return to their ships and make preparations to Sortie seaward.
MCFS Sydney
MCF Helicopter Carrier
Deep in Horde Territory with Taskforce One
4PM
For Ten hours the Taskforce had made its way deep into horde territory and the tension onboard felt so think you could cut it with a knife as Captain Lance Augustus Grey stood on the Bridge and watched as on the deck six Navalised HIND-Ds were warming up while behind them on the rear of the flightdeck that once held Sea Furies and Fireflies were six Sea Cobras. The 30 year old Husky/Fox hybrid looked around at the other ships in the taskforce as the Choppers clambered airborne and then banked towards the distant coastline, skimming the waves as they did so.
Off to the Sydney’s Port side the massive Saratoga began launching MCF upgraded F-14E ‘Super Tomcats’ while the Carrier Melbourne off to Starboard had begun launching AV-8B Harrier II jumpjets.
“And So it begins” he said quietly as the Choppers and aircraft vanished in the distance.
Turning his attention to the Cruisers and Battlewagons that make up the taskforce he watches as the Turrets swing to port and the Barrels elevate. Down on the flight deck a number of camera crews were recording the first naval strike into enemy territory for the people back home, many who were waiting to see that the Forces were striking back against the people responsible for the attacks on their cities and the MCF was happy to provide that. It was also because this was the largest concentration of ‘Big Guns’ since before WW2 and they were ready to deliver swift revenge on the massed Horde forces. That event itself was noteworthy and the with this also being the last war that the battleship Colorado would be participating in prior to retirement and conversion to a museum, there were no shortage of camera crews and cameras, even the Sydney’s crew lined the rails to record the firing of the big guns. They were not to be disappointed.
The lead battlewagon was the Wisconsin and it was her 16 inch guns that spoke first, each barrel belching flame and smoke in turn before lowering back to +/-0 Elevation so they could be reloaded. The Iowa spoke next, the concussion from her guns being felt on the deck of the Sydney and the roar of the blasts echoing across the water. Soon every Battleship and Cruiser in the fleet were belching flame and smoke into the sky in turn, the whole process starting again as soon as the Wisconsin had reloaded.
Captain Grey stepped back inside the bridge and looked at the Smiling crewmen around him, many who had never seen a Battlewagon hurling its massive projectiles of death at anyone. The ones who had seen it before were easy to spot, they just stood quietly, watching the continuing barrage.
The massed forces were caught completely unaware by the barrage that ripped through their camps and killed many troops as they slept. Explosions tore apart the castle and showered the surrounding area with debris before the fire began to fall onto the harbour area, destroying the huts and causing many ships to be reduced to splinters. More ships tried to put to sea but were sunk as they tried to get away. The Harbour rocked from one explosion after another as the shells fell.
The massed troops had begun to head for the trees when the Aircraft started strafing and laying down napalm on them. The Gunships hovered and laced everything that moved on the ground with cannon fire and rockets while the planes bombed and dropped the napalm tanks on the tree line.
Within an hour the area was ablaze and in ruins with no survivors that could be seen, at which point the attacking force broke off and returned to the carriers.
The Battleships and Cruisers ceased their fire and the who Taskforce turned to head for Calian waters again, their objective completed. With the plumes of smoke rising from the cliff tops the amassed MCF fleet headed out to see, leaving only death and destruction in their wake.
The Baltimore class Heavy Cruisers Bremerton and Macon broke away from the taskforce to rendezvous with the Wichita class Fleet Oiler MCFRS Kansas City to take on fuel, munitions and foodstocks. It would take another three hours for the two ships to reach the Kansas City and her escorts and after that it would be another 7 hours and they would be in Calian Waters and home free.

"The Battleships and Cruisers ceased their fire and the (who) Taskforce..." Just a forgotten thought I'm guessing? Happens to me all the time.
Other than those two there were a few misspellings, but that's to be expected.
