First spider photo of 2010. Went out looking for wolf spiders and found this happy fellow.
Male wolf spider (Lycosidae. Not sure of Genus or species, but they're prevalent in my yard.
I'm pretty happy with this shot, other than the stupid blade of grass in the foreground mucking up the left side of the shot.
Still, I like it. :)
This photo was taken just tonight, in pitch dark conditions, save for my LED headlamp.

Except they can rot the fuck out of the area? Get bit on the dick[or boob, if you're a girl] and come back and talk about how not-dangerous they are. c_c
But seriously they're certainly more dangerous than any wolf spider in the states, and if I remember correctly it and the black widow are the only two "venomous"/dangerous spiders in the US.

Gleeeeeeeee! Hello there lil' fella!
That's one hell of a shot. Love the way his eyes have come out. Damn but that's a perky little thing!
I must try and photograph my pet mantis. He's slowly getting bigger - now about 3cm long. His favourite dinner is pantry moth.

I'm in Australia. This one is a local species. I found the egg case, and didn't recognise it, so hatched it out and kept one of the nymphs asa pet. Seems to be a Orthodera Ministralis. I 'think'. Won't know until it reaches adult size (if it's an Orthodera, it will have bright blue spots oon the inside of its feeding arms)
He's a perky little guy! I like him!

Awesome, I've never had that species. What's the average adult size for that species? The S. Carolinas we have here average about 2/12 inches, with both genders being about equal in length (males are more slim & narrow with fully-usable wings while females are heavier-bodied with unusuable wings that only cover two-thirds of their abdomen).
Mmmm - if it IS one of these, then they get to be moderately large - about 41/2 inches long. Really green and pretty.
There's a BIG local mantis about 7 inches long that pops up in our trees every now and then. Very impressive - glossy brown and designed to look like raggedy leaf bark. My house mate walked in with one sitting in her hair the other night.
We get big ol' Chinese mantises, too.

Oh! And we also have the most adorable itty bitty inch long mantises that look like dried tree resin - red and amber coloured. Damned hard to find, though!

Its so cute!! Photo Questionnn. It says your aperture is at f/10 .. when i put my camera on that it takes really slow pics so things move and get blurry. How did you get it so clear and perfect? Am I missing something/not understanding something about how to use aperture correctly? I have a canon t1i btw,
Pfft, if it was just the screen you should be able to wipe it off without any damage. :P
Though I admire your screen quality that makes the little avatar seem real enough for you to get out a can of RAID. :P
Besides, unless you are in or near a tree in Venezuela you're unlikely to run across the girl in my avatar unless you're in a pet store, a zoo or visiting someone who owns tarantuals (specifically a P. Irmina). ;)
