Klemmganou laouen amied! The Lamentation is one of the few times that our city is open to all under the rules of Hospitality, so its a good time to take in the sights. Lamentation day is very important to us, remembering the Fall of Ys and its rebirth beneath the waves. While only Ahes knew the city before it sank, we still take the time to remember our own stories, diving from the surface into our new life here in the Beacon City with our sisters. Lamentation is also called the Pardon of Ys, very similar to the processions that are popular in nearby Breizh.

Of all the Marie-Morgane, Only Ahes herself remembers Ker-Ys, the spectacular city in the Bay with its towers & great walls shining in the sun. For the rest, it has always been Ys-Beneath-The-Waves, a hauntingly beautiful undersea ruin. And yet the fall of Ys is a defining chapter in the lives of all the Marie-Morgane & they mark the calamity with their most important holiday, the Lamentation of Ys, celebrating not only City’s Fall and rebirth, but their own stories as well.
The Lamentation of Ys is a week of festivities, but lamentation day itself is the centerpiece, beginning with a formal procession from La Cathedral Engloutie on Churchhill, through the ruined streets of the Lower Wards.to the Great Palace of Ahes and the Druidsgrove within. Participants move low along the streets, keeping themselves as upright as possible as they “walk” along the road, carrying alchemically luminescent torches and singing a slow dirgelike Gwerz about the Fall of Ker-Ys. Kanerez of the Morbarzh provide instrumental accompaniment from selected places along the route. The group stops at the palace, with each mourner offering a prayer in the Druidsgrove. Upon reaching the cavernous great hall, each participant places their torch in a special bracket, giving the room the appearance of a star-filled sky. The slow and somber procession now becomes a lively celebration of rebirth, full of singing, dancing and feasting.
The Marie-Morgane will often wear extravagant clothing approximations of “surface” fashions, either something owned in her previous life or stolen from a wrecked surface ship or unattended dock. These costumes have become a popular part of the ceremony and a source of competition among the Marie-Morgane, hoping to
outdo their rivals and impress their friends with these over the top displays.
Lamentation is a rare time where outsiders are allowed to access the city under the rules of Hospitality, although this does not mean their time will be spent unmolested, as the Marie-Morgane, often in high spirits from brandy, may try to entice newcomers to stay with an accelerated Courtship ritual.
