Now, before I actually put him onto paper, there were plenty of different ideas of the character should be, however I won't go into all of them, and mainly focus on the ones created for the drawn depictions. Also all the stories are extremely quickly summarized, and will miss out on quite a few details.
2016: This is my first time showing this depiction of Ashton, as this was one of the oldest designs of the character drawn digitally. I came up with this design when I wanted to try out in creating a child character. In this depiction Ashton was primarily a Mechanic who liked cars, and had a love for racing, there was going to be a whole plot about him becoming the greatest racer of all time, but honestly, I couldn't remember much about the old story, as I trashed it entirely.
The design for this one is fairly simple and neat, although what the heck is wrong with that face? ugh...
2018: Once I started uploading my work to FA, Ashton had a bit of a new story, with him being captured and raised by a group of Bandits, in a Mad Max-ish kinda world. which lead to a kinda violent, but still mostly nice depiction of the character. After a car crash which caused his gang to abandon him, he was eventually rescued by scavengers of a nice little town called Keon, and lived there for a while before eventually deciding to leave. in his stay, he would eventually meet a girl named Veronica and the two would become good friends due to their love for cars, and causing havoc.
Honestly, this design feels like a downgrade to the previous one the outfit and fur colors are boring, also, I messed up the proportions of his legs they are not supposed to be that long!
2019: This was the year where the character became kinda edgy, his backstory was still similar, however instead of bandits, Ashton was recruited into a militia as a child soldier, forced to fight a war he didn't even care about. This was also when his Mechanic-ish personality was swapped for a more brooding soldier one. Since he has combat training, he would actually fight to save the town of Keon from a bandit attack, but after the town learnt that he was affiliated with the militia, they want him gone.
The early 2019 version fixes up the issues of the previous depiction, he now has more colors, and a more detailed outfit, and has more accurate proportions for a tween. The late 2019 version being an older version of the earlier 2019 design and an attempt at Stylization, however, I disliked it as the style doesn't fit the character at all. Since he's older he now has access to more advanced equipment, instead of just scraps.
2020: The new suggested backstory for this character is rather opposite, with Ashton starting out with a rather happy life, before things got pretty dark with the massacre of his town by the militia for supplies, which left him cripplingly depressed from survivor's guilt, however, vowing for revenge, he decided to seek the help of a legendary soldier named 'Nightbane' who eventually agreed to train him to combat the militia, Ashton does eventually succeed but becomes an absolute monster, crippling the militia in the process, after refusing an order from his mentor to execute child soldiers, Nightbane and Ashton fight to the death, before Ashton manages to win, and slaughters his mentor, however the children, after seeing the battle, now fear him and refuse to be rescued. which leads him to realize that He is lost with no more direction, now that he's had his revenge and is the most feared creature in the wasteland, and that he can no longer return home either. Which just brings him back to square one. However he is given a second chance at life after meeting Veronica.
This redesign is based off his 2016 depiction, as I wanted to go back to his more 'Mechanic' personality, it also uses older, brighter colors while taking elements from his 2019 depictions, such as more fur colors, and digitigrade legs, and large cartoony four-fingered hands. this version of Ashton is meant to look adorable, cute, and cuddly, for now...

It's not often you get to read such a detailed development tale for a character. It is much like how different shows and movies get rebooted until everything finally becomes 'just right'.
I am glad you maintained the mechanic aspect of Ashton. This is a variation from many other character backgrounds. He now seems to have a sort of 'anti-hero' feel as he acts in his beliefs and interests but ends up doing a lot of harm in the process. Before meeting Veronica, one would say he is causing other children to feel as he did when his home was attacked and he had his 'survivor's guilt'.
Upon doing, to him, the right thing by not slaying the children, taking down his mentor, and being 'feared', I could only imagine the epiphany he'd have and how Veronica's character would be there to show him that he doesn't have to be the monster he's become.
Dark but deep. Thanks for sharing. :)

Alright, I'll kinda be honest, Ashton's backstory is heavily based off a 1978 japanese kids movie called Chirin's Bell, or Ringing bell in the english version.
I'll post a link to the wikipedia article : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringing_Bell
Although I kinda want to make a few changes, firstly to explore the relationship between Ashton and Nightbane more, to show why Ashton believes in Nightbane's ideology. Such as how Nightbane sees the world, and that while what he says is questionable, he does kinda have a point at times, I mean, he's not right, but not exactly completely wrong either.
Secondly, while the movie ends on a rather sad and somber note, Ashton is sorta given a second chance thanks to Veronica, but after nearly half of his current life of slaughter, fighting, and living in a horrible wasteland. he finds it extremely difficult to reintegrate back into a calmer part of the world, to the point where he becomes a Mercenary, just to get by in life.

No worries in how the concept is based after an Anime. The story I spent the most time trying to write with all OCs was inspired massively by 'Final Fantasy 7' and 'Yoshi's Island'. So inspiration is inspiration. If anything, should you post something to direct readers to the anime, you would be helping folks, like me, come to appreciate an important part of what got you creative. :)
One story I wrote here, which has a lot of folks' OCs, was based after the game 'Chrono Cross'. It took me 3 years to write it and, despite few readers, I couldn't be happier knowing how I genuinely wrote a story using those little 'discussion boxes' that tend to appear when characters are talking.
Then there is my closest pal, Nishi, who was inspired by '.hack://SIGN'. I got myself a copy of the series to see how it influenced him and, well, it is very fun seeing what got a lot of creative potential off the ground. :)

So Ashton starts out as a young, anti-hero whose actions eventually lead him to kill his mentor and go on to be a tragic hero? You are putting in a lot of emotions in your story. You can't help but feel awful for Ashton while knowing the reason he is feared, ignored, or, possibly, unwanted is for his reputation.
Aston doesn't sound like the kind who is, later on, trying to run from his past. To me, from what you write, I see him as a character who knows that he has walked a dangerous line and just wants to know he did something to help others not end up in his situation. Perhaps Veronica is the one who helps him find other ways to frame his past in crafting his future?
Regardless, I look forward to reading more as you share it. :)

I’ve seen Chirin’s Bell! When I have spoken to others who have seen it, their usual responses were that they were unpleasantly surprised because the beginning of the film starts off a like a cute, innocent Disney film before taking a hard turn after Chirin trains under the wolf who killed his mother.
While the movie was definitely a tragic film, I always thought it had a beautiful kind of sadness, where it presented the hard truth that even an innocent little lamb like Chirin could become a ‘monster’ if he was forced to endure certain circumstances.
I had always thought there were parallels between Chirin’s Bell and reports that describe the experiences of child soldiers. If this is the idea you are going to be exploring with Ashton and Nightbane, then I can’t wait to see how you explore the psychology and character dynamics with these themes!
