Euuuuh...! I still shudder when I think about how brave and a little daft those men were who crewed those hydrogen filled airships. Yeah... This little gadget was for a brave soul who would be lowered under the cloud cover to see where the airship was. Note that there's no room for a parachute or machine gun for that matter.
