With too many relatives at home to be at home, Pogo tried to run away, like 25% of all storylines in Walt Kelly's Pogo feature. In the middle of the night he ran into a firefly and hang around with him a while. This included a bit where the strip was blacked out two panels of every four, which Walt Kelly thought would save time on drawing. It turned out to not work because, he observed, you have to think hard to have a setup which makes blacked-out panels make sense.
The amount by which I love the shading I managed on Pogo and, particularly, the right end of the log is almost balanced by how much I hate how Pogo's left foot came out. The toes are good, on both feet for a wonder, but his foot looks like Popeye's arm instead.
The secret to the firefly's glow? I drew a circle around him on the sketching layer and drew radiant lines mostly out from that. This took me stupidly long to figure out to do.
