“A witch dwells to the east of Midgard, in the forest called Járnviðr. In that wood dwell the troll-women, who are known as Járnviðjur. The old witch bears many giants for sons, and all in the shape of wolves; and from this source are these wolves sprung.”
- Gylfaginning
A race of gigantic wolf-skinned men and women, the Fjallúlfar (Old Norse “Mountain wolves”) are a sub-race of Ulfhednar who are famed for their great height and strength. Rumored to be of Jotunn lineage, the Fjallúlfar are a truly ancient race whose exact origins have been lost to myth and legend; perhaps even more so than the already mysterious Ulfhednar themselves.
The Fjallúlfar tribes live in small but heavily fortified communities inside the many forest valleys that dot the Northland’s most northern mountain ranges and as a result they have little contact with the outside world though their Ulfhednar cousins frequently trade and interact with them. As time passed though, these communities would gradually open up to the rest of the Northlands and the wider world even thanks to the efforts of famed Fjallúlfr high chieftain and hero Jormunrekr the Easterner, whose adventures and vast wealth gained in the lands of men awestruck the Fjallúlfar tribes, and Ulfhedinn chieftain Hrōðiwulfaz, who unified the Ulfhednar and Fjallúlfar tribes into a single kingdom in the year 550 AD; establishing what would later become the Ulfung Empire.
Fjallúlfr Chieftain, 1600 BC
Although the Fjallúlfar largely kept to themselves for the most part, their society nevertheless entered into the Bronze Age shortly around the same time as their Ulfhednar cousins did, who in turn followed in the same footsteps as their Norsemen tribal neighbors did. The Fjallúlfar swiftly adapted to the use of bronze and in time they became master artisans creating great and many works of bronze jewelry, tools, and more importantly weapons and armor.
This Fjallúlfr chieftain pictured above is an example of elite warrior class of the Fjallúlfar clans; well-armed heroic warrior chiefs with the most advanced bronze armour and weapons of the period. His master-crafted armor and weapons are engraved with runes of power and protection and his war paint more or less follows the same principles in addition to the intimidation factor. Chieftains such as him would have commanded clan contingents ranging from 50 to a 100 warriors while the larger and powerful Fjallúlfar clans could field warbands of a 100 to 500 warriors with their most common enemies being hostile Ulfhednar, Fjallúlfar, and Norsemen raiders.
Standing at a height of 14ft and weighting almost 500lbs., this Fjallúlfr warrior is a deadly opponent on the battlefield and the mere sight of a Fjallúlfr warband alone was enough to cower even the most brave of warriors.
