Think of it as in Azur Lane: the ship is the character. The girl is the ship's avatar! As for how it looks, ships from the Mirage Fleet (appropriately) are equipped with a field generator that masks and distorts their appearance more and more the further away you are from them.
I had to ask Blak since I wasn't clear on the exact details!
There's an AI mainframe in the ship itself, and it maintains an ansible link with the Avatar! The Avatar itself (read: the girl) is just an advanced, very lifelike android body controlled remotely!
