If everything that made him what he was before is gone, the boy that was is dead.
All that's left is a facsimile replacement.

This is exactly the kind of thing I think of in the dark of the night when I'm considering the possibilities that exist post-mortality. Unles there's a grand reward at the end where you remember every life you ever have, reincarnation is a crapshoot. If you don't remember it, every life you lived is over and has no continuation.
Why. Your just screwing over your son because you believe he can’t handle his power. Maybe his reborn form could handle it and assuming the reason why he was reborn was because he couldn’t handle it at all is pretty reckless and stupid. Help him discover and control his powers, don’t fucking suppress it.
