There are many stories of Faerie being a magical land of eternal youth and endless bounty, where everything is carefree as a warm summer's day. While the Beacon City can claim the former, and the sea has been generous to us, it is hardly an easy life. We are all newcomers to our home and the sea is a dangerous place. We must work hard and do what we must to survive. Nothing is given freely.
- Clemence, First Kanterez of the Morbarzh
Unlike many Sidhe or Re Vihan, the Marie-Morgane require food to survive. Their food sources generally consist of 3 activities: Hunting, Farming and Raiding. Armed with
fishspears and nets, the Marie-Morgane have become skilled aquatic Hunters, chasing down all all manner of fish and crustaceans.
More recently, they have begun to see some success in Aquaculture, cultivating kelp, fish shellfish and other commodities in farms on Gardenhill in Ys-Beneath-the-Waves. A small but growing network of dedicated farmers and shepherds have been making great progress in their efforts after much trial and error.
Perhaps their most infamous activity is Raiding. Highly territorial and nostalgic for their landbound past, the Marie-Morgane will frequently attack surface vessels and coastal settlements, seeking equipment, food, luxuries and skilled individuals. Surface food is highly prized in Ys, alchemically preserved to allow its storage and consumption underwater. Brandy is especially sought after and carried in small bladder pouches. Ships flying the Akitanian flag are especially susceptible to attack, as their liquor is the favourite of Ys. A sailor superstition has arisen to dump a few casks overboard when passing near Marie-Morgane territory, dubbed "the fish tax." More recently, Akitanian merchants have begun widely adopting the use of Windships, which the Marie-Morgane call Sky-Thieves.
Following the 3rd Bleed, Ys and its colonies have begun to trade with friendly settlements along the Ar Mor, hoping to gain ready access to surface resources, a growing industry.
Today's mermaid is the Ranger Dominique, a dashing adventurer who found themself making the transition from charming rogue to damsel in distress during a sojourn to Ys-Beneath-The-Waves. Dominique has since returned to their old ways, slaying monsters, scouting locations and flirting with pretty girls at the tavern. I really love how they turned out here and this is probably my favourite image of the 2020 set.
