I don't think "finding his weakness" means "let's use kryptonite!". Weakness in a character means something he can't ignore; it could be a habit, a person, a place, etc. Finding the criminal's weakness means finding a way to predict his/her next move in order to capture him/her. What I found incredibly dumb was Legosi's "gee, he's a hybrid like me! he must be my friend!" thinking when Melon was already under his custody. There's plot armor and then there's Legosi losing half of his brain cells in a second.
Yeah, maybe that's the thing: characters become dumber/useless so the plot can progress. It might've been a good idea if the Beastars author (I forgot her name) had more time to plan this plot, or at least hire a professional writer. It's not really her fault since she clearly can write an interesting story, it's just that she needed more time to plan the Melon saga.
