Ooh, even at an early stage I can see this was based on a Bearded Vulture! You can see the feathers of the 'beard' coming out too, but I think the eyes are the most recognizable, in this case, they are very unique to this species!
Pardon my bird-ramble, haha! Really great work on this piece, dynamic and expressive pose, and a cool idea! :D
