So what is a Marie-Morgane? That's a rather complicated answer. On the simplest level, we are mermaids, although there are other races that we feel deserve that title more that us. Specifically, we are the mermaids of the found city of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves, the flotsum of the surface world taken into the refuge of our underwater home by Queen Ahes Dahut. Again, the presence of other creatures calling our city home, and the existence of our kind outside its walls gives me pause. Most specifically we are those whose fate is tied with our city and our queen, a powerful magical bond that defines who we are, a bond strengthened by our history, culture and sisterhood.
While I dislike the technical nature, perhaps the most clear description comes from the Grímur Faerie, a surface book from Fjallkonan that we are lucky enough to possess a copy of in our libraries.

Anatomy
The Marie-Morgane resemble human women from the waist up, but in lieu of legs they possess a fish-like tail covered in colourful scales. The shape of their caudal tailfins varies depending on the individual, but generally consists of one or two webbed sections capable of propelling the Marie-Morgane through the water. Some Marie-Morgane also possess additional pelvic or dorsal fins, but these do not appear to be universal traits and only occur rarely. Their upper halves resemble sexually mature human females, possessing generally human features and proportions. Variations among them are as diverse as those found in humans, with skin tone, breast size, and eye color coming in all varieties. Hair colour and length is similarly diverse, although the Marie-Morgane also possess colours not found in humans, such as greens, blues and purples. The hands of a Marie-Morgane consists of 4 jointed fingers and an opposable thumb, like humans, but with webbing between each digit. Some Marie-Morgane also possess claws, but this seems to be a rare mutation. Due to their aquatic nature and the Church's ban on dissection, little is known about their internal structures, but it has been surmised they are generally similar to humans.
Facial characteristics
For the most part, the Marie-Morgane have facial features indistinguishable from humans, but they have several noteworthy external features that differentiate them, The most notable of these are their prominent "ear-fins" which consist of colourful, rib-like veins, with translucent webbing stretched between them. These ear-fins are identical in colour to the Marie-Morgane's tails. Additionally, like other creatures of Faerie, they will sometimes have hair and eye colours that are not found in mortals, which may take on the distinctive shimmer of glamour, especially when in Faerie.
Last year, we took a journey beneath the Mor Bras (the Great Sea) to meet the Marie-Morgane of the Damned City of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves, once capital of a great Kingdom, condemned to the sea floor. We return now to the Court of Queen Ahes-Dahut, the Stormbringer to learn more about the ways of the Mermaids of Kroashent. Our guide will be the Bard Clemence d'Auvergne as we take a deeper dive into this undersea realm for Mermay 2020. I hope you enjoy the series. Feedback and comments are always appreciated.
