Ewww. I know when I went to visit some friends last month they were willing to bake me an apple pie if I brought down a big pack of toilet paper. It's not been too bad here the past few weeks but yeah certainly that second half of March it was frankly impossible to find any. Hopefully it eases up in your area soon.
I honestly thought that the panic would be over after two months, but here we are still dealing with empty shelves. It makes me wonder just what happened. Do stores get that restocked so infrequently? Did the manufacturing plants shut down? Where is the deficiency in the supply line?
Some of the plants likely have been affected though I'm sure they are operating as high as they can. Our distribution center is still one of the ones for my store chain that is struggling some to keep perishables stocked and I think a lot of the bottleneck is the available trailer space/truckers available to haul the freight. So much of the goods here in the US are moved via trailers (both to DCs and then from DCs to stores) that a huge spike in demand creates a bottleneck in getting the stores what they need. It's likely demand is also staying high as probably many families have gone through what they managed to find back in March. Most stores have been restricting the number of packages customers can buy at one time but even then if even half of the customers that enter the store that day buy toilet paper it doesn't take long before the store runs out.
Oh yeah, I hadn't considered the trucks available for transport. I bet they usually have those trucks packed full going to and from the DCs as it is, so trying to restock something that doesn't normally sell out like that would require an extra truck or two and there just aren't drivers available. I actually wonder how long most products have to sit and wait for a truck to become available to ship it. I imagine no company wants to run a partially filled truck, so the product is waiting until a full truck can be loaded. This reminds me of a process improvement course I took, in which we categorize any form of transportation as waste because there is no change occurring with the material and the customer doesn't want the transportation (minus the delivery, of course). I don't think we give truckers enough credit for what they do.
kinda want to hoard gasoline since nobody's using any right now, but don't exactly have storage for it. our stores have been rationing too, but the factories just don't make enough 'luxury' toilet paper to supply all the people now staying at home, no longer pooping on company time with the crappy toilet paper..
