The 1956 Summer Olympics were held in Australia, and so Walt Kelly sent Pogo and Mouse over for it. They didn't get to the games proper, but did meet up with a couple of local kangaroos, seen above, who took them for Martians and then they arranged an interplanetary Olympics, so you see where this all fits together. Anyway here's the kangaroos and while they're not the first kangaroos I've ever drawn, they are the first ones drawn as part of this little digital-sketch-a-day project that I've managed to keep up for a whole month now. I have no idea when this project will end, or what with, but I am considering whether to try redrawing something besides Walt Kelly panels. I might just try doing more with backgrounds, as note the rare tree and high grasses that add so much here.

Thank you. When I first read Pogo I thought the nose-shading unpleasant to look at, but I have discovered that it is incredibly soothing to actually draw. Even on my ancient iPad, where hatching is much more annoying than it ought to be. I don't know what Kelly's motivations were in putting them in many-but-not-all characters, but it may just be relaxation.
