I finished this picture and realized WAAAY too late that It really would have been better served just as a painting or something considering there's far to many historical innacuracies with making it look like an old timey photograph.
1. the Queen Barbary in my head-cannon for the islands co-existed with Rubeus, Rose, and the other Crystal bearer before they became bearers. Which puts her historically at at least 1000 years ago. While the photograph would be much much more modern than that.
2. the subspecies of the Barbary lion was not taxonomically introduced until 1826. While I could make the case that Queen Barabary's title "translated" into her more common name in the future I still have a hard time justifying this, but an easier time than the other issue.
3. So if I ever draw her again I'll probably do so as a proper painting. I'm sure lionesses ruled the islands off and on for centuries past Barbary anyway but the sepia toned photograph was just something I wanted to do.
OH WELL enjoy the artwork and ignore the artist's existensial crisis.

Perhaps it is a photograph of a painting that was lost to a fire or something. Perhaps even the original portrait was an artists' conception based on written descriptions (and/or a synthesis of several existing portraits) centuries after their rule? Depending on how long after their rule, that might explain the historical inaccuracies as well. Also, might it be possible in-universe that the subspecies was named in the Queen's honor instead of the reverse?
aww I appreciate that. I have two amazing people that help too but thank you so much for the suggestions on how to fix this inconstency in my head because I really like the idea of Barbary being the queen during the time of the Bearer's active era. I fear I'm going to need a mini series to cover the crap they went through to get to where they are but one thing at a time :p
