Back in the fall and beginning stages of winter in 2019, I fell into a depressing state and some things have happened that didn't help which I'm not going to discuss because I want it to stay in the past. But during this time I was finding ways to take my mind off of things. One was taking pictures of the desert in Nevada and Arizona while I was traveling out there for the company I work for. And another was a simple sketch.
It first started out as a base that I created by drawing a stick figure with a pose then a rough sketch to line up. Then eventually I started getting more into it and even started enjoying it. I worked on it during deliveries and taking breaks while over the road and worked on it bits at a time just to make it perfect in my eyes without tracing.
An artist friend or two had suggested that suggested tracing just to build up my skills, but I refused because I wanted to develop my own skills with what I knew and learned so I can have my own style. And I would feel more accomplished knowing that I did it all by myself.
And this was the result.
I originally completed this back in November and wanted to line it but didn't really have the time because of the holidays and then prepping for TFF 2020.
It's not the greatest sketch, but I'm proud of myself to accomplish. I present you my fursona, Deadman Joe, chilling on the sidelines waiting for his name to be called to tryout for his school's swim team.
My very first sketch ever in years and I never knew that I was able to create something like this. Especially on a free sketch program that I downloaded to my Galaxy Tab A.
I hope that I have the time do another sketch again. It was very therapeutical.

I know how you felt about not wanting to trace things, I felt the same way. Reading and taking notes from anatomy books really helped me, not necessarily to make these intensely realistic figures but just to have an understanding on how the figure is laid out. My favorite was Dynamic Anatomy by Burne Hogarth, just had a lot of good descriptions of how to lay a figure out. Hope that helps
