The hippogryph is the product of a mating between a griffin and a horse. Griffins are a cross between an eagle and a lion (sometimes with a little dragon thrown in). The hippogryph thus usually has the griffin's eagle-like wings, head, and and forefeet with the backend being horselike. The tail can either be a horse tail or a lion's tail, like a griffin.
