Philomela - Flapping Wings Animation
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
I did a rendering of Philomela for fun because people told me they did not understand what i meant with "she needs to extend her transmission to fly".
I'm a "stickler for details" (euphemism) which i understand the artists' liberty to do as they wish i like to show my characters as something that "seem plausible"
In this specific case, while the gear is basically "floating in mid-air" (there ejection system was never really modeled because at that point i might as well try and design her entirely) most of the items are there to give plausibility.
I tried to give her 4 wing beats to accelerate 4 wing beats at "full" speed and 3 wing beats to decelerate. It's... sill barely in the limits of FA's upload limits.
In theory she has about 40 to 50 wing beats per second which is... barely doable within the GIF hard limit of 100 FPS buuuut most browsers will at most show 50 FPS, any more than that and they will actually slow down the animation to 10 FPS for... "reasons". (mostly backwards compatibility)
Soooo basically the moment where she is beating the wings at the fastest? Yeah, that's still something like 1/8th of the speed she should flap them to be... "air buoyant" ("""weightless""")
But ... like ... we're talking about the air speed of a humanoid metal bird i'd say "looking plausible" is one thing, actually doing calculations would be madness... right?

No, she just has ridiculously small wings for her size and weight
She is spring powered.
Canonically it takes about 1 hour for 2 minutes of operation or about 20 seconds of flight.
She has 2 coils that mostly handle precision movements and work as a tension reductor (seen here https://www.furaffinity.net/view/34081729/ ) and are connected from her "main oscillator" which is what defines the smallest fraction of time that her brain can work on and is visible on her heart window.
Her main "power reserve" is a huge spring in the belly, right in front of her """spine""" that also doubles as her """brain""" since it's a shaped cylinder that is analogically sampled based on the current program.
She is made of your average die cast air hardened molibdenum steel available in the post-war 1920s somewhere around DH36 of modern types.
Sulphurized steel was not yet feasible at the time.
This means vibrations will be high and she is a bit "rickety" in the air much like those airplanes of old, but by the average of the time she is super-stable and quite sturdy, mostly due to the fact the "stuff that rattles" is her external cover, and her internal structure is quite densely packed and very well caged.
😂👍💖

But why should she enter a fight?! 🤔
I mean in her comic you can read here at one point she actually dies because she gets her wings torn off and they are basically connected to her brain, so what you say is totally true.
But she is was never meant to be a combat droid. Quite the opposite. 🤔
