Some people on a group chat pretty much accused me of stealing art. Am I in the wrong?

Sorry if this isn’t appropriate for here, I just need to rant about it. I’m not going to use people’s names, just letters.
The art in the thumbnail is a free to use PFP base that I found online. Krapette (the artist) has a watermark, which I left on the art. I also made a ref sheet for him, which was made using a base by kaijuparty. I made the credit larger and placed it at the top of the art, as I wanted to move the image down to leave more room for writing at the top. (I’ve posted it on my page if you want to see what I mean) I was super proud of both pieces, so last night I put them on a group chat with my friends. Everybody said that he looked cute, and I was even happier with him. However, this morning, on the group chat S took a screenshot of the icon and zoomed in close to the watermark and circled it. They captioned the picture “Is anyone going to mention this?” M replied, “About what”, and A replied, “Yeah I noticed it last night”. Then, S sent another screenshot, zoomed in to the watermark, of the ref sheet with the caption “Or this?” A said they “searched it up last night and it’s a watermark for another artist” E joined the conversation and told them “Yeah I think she used someone else’s line art as a base”, and M said, “Yeh she used someone else’s line art as a base”, then added, “She said it in her message” and linked everybody to the massage I had sent. It was me explaining what art program and drawing tablet I used after someone asked. At the end of the message I stated, “but I used a base for the line art”. After that, S and A stopped texting about it. The thing is, I left the watermarks on there and they were visible. I mean, I didn’t clearly state the line art wasn’t mine, only the character design. However, I don’t see the issue after I mentioned the art wasn’t mine? Plus, I didn't claim the actual art to be mine, only the character in it.
Rant over.
