For standard English,
Correct: “Your friend was…” | Incorrect “Your friend were…”
It’s like first-person where:
Correct: “I was…” | Incorrect “I were…”
Not like second-person where:
Correct: “You were…” | Incorrect “You was…”
An exception is hypotheticals where "were" is almost always better, because why not have a rule like that?
