The unfortunate truth is that the Koopalings aren't related to Bowser in anyway, so that can't be true... though that used to be my theory as well, that Bowser's dad was Morton and Morton Jr. was named as such because he had the same coloration as his grandfather.

Technically it was never retconned. It was something inaccurately assumed by American translators that Japan wasn't even aware of initially. They were never designed as his kids, in fact they didn't even have names originally.
