Cartooning. Not easy. One day I'll figure this shit out. Meanwhile I'll keep trying.

It is hard. Inking is even harder as it also requires that confidence. Best thing I can think of is to get a little sketchbook (or set yourself a similar number of digital canvases) and just draw the character over and over from as many poses as possible. You'll make changes and mistakes that'll become changes. But dood, an amazing start and really, there's only inches beteen your first try and greatness!
Absolutely; you can futz with pencil all over the place, but the inking's gotta be spot-on what it needs to be. Repair work isn't impossible, but man it's a chore.
That might be just the ticket to break me of my repetitions...taking Berbie, for example, and filling a sketchbook with 'im. Up 'til now I figured it was figure drawing alone that would get me there, but I can't see wrong in doing what you suggest. On the contrairy, I look at what you've done just over this year and my jaw drops.
*Hugs* You've been there every step of the way, mister. Thank you. *hugstight*

Ah, it pleases me when I see a style that is different from the reigning convention here on FA.
Stuff like this makes me want to post my 'real' art, but I also feel preasured to disguise my drawing style when I contribute drawings here.
I'm rambling too much. Awesome pic bro!

You're in good company, as it turns out. I know of several folks on FA (including myself) who use FA as an excuse to explore different styles (or keep their hobbies segregated from their professional lives).
FA is for play; that's what de Berbie say. Yay!
*ahem* Sorry for the lame rhyme. Ramble away, my man, an extended conversation with you would be a lot of fun. *hugs*

This brief conversation led me onto a pondering spree that began shortly after you replyed.
Something supremely weird happened recently. I watched an artist. But it wasn't just any ordinary artist. I know the person in real life.
I'm still trippin' balls after the fact. What are the chances?
This led me to feel that I'm faking the funk, I fear the big studio gestapo going around and creating a list to blackball artists. Instead, I assume an art disgise & running amok aiming to please 'mean-to-eachother' internet mystery people whom I cannot relate to.
I like your play attitude. I like it so much that it ought to be the official mantra for FA.
I ought to just loosen up and do things that are more in line with my desires.
I'm pretty wasted now, I hope that this ramble is coherent.

Is und wuz coherent, my man. :)
The reasons for the 'tude in the animation industry have more to do with the scarcity of jobs here than anything else, I think. It's real--but it's also overblown. As a buddy of mine who was in the industry told me: "It's not so much that it's porn; if it's badly drawn, that's what gets you."
There's also the great American hangup over sex to deal with. We're schitzo on the subject, pushing it and calling it shameful almost in the same breath. Meanwhile, violence ain't a problem. Ooooh....here comes a pet peeve. *stomp*
I don't think there's anything wrong with being circumspect about the less mainstream aspects of your artistic ventures. That's just playing it sensibly. It's just as important--probably more so--that you be at peace with who you are.
We don't play enough as adults, either. Not nearly enough. I'm finally rediscovering that vibe as a man pushing forty, and I'm glad I made the effort.

The animation industry is such a mixed bag. I'm glad to read a message that differs from my gathered mindtrash. The signals are mixed, but I value them.
Sex is wrong and weird, but only because the public-at-large chooses to see it that way. It's too bad, really. They need to grow some vaginpride, or else the US will end up like Japan. (Which would actually be kinda cool with all those used panty vending machines and all.)
I was introduced to this site almost 1 year ago with the intention of making art for them and not so much for myself. I didn't expect to find artists that I can naturally identify with. Well, I am treading on unfamiliar and FappyMoist grounds, It's best not to give into showboating and play it safe. There are other, more appropriate venues for that.
There was this quote by Nietzsche that went something like "Maturity of a man is finally reached when he regains his ability to play as a child". I love that quote.
Nietzsche died of syphillis. What a guy!

Cartooning? It's harder than it looks. Easier, too.
Just pare everything down to the essentials. Use all that knowledge of anatomy and stuff now and then, but only show what you HAVE to show. If you want that 40s animated look, keep stuff solid. Study the masters: freeze-frame some Looney Tunes, pore over some Sterrett, inhale Herriman, and of course break out the Preston Blair book.
The hard thing for a lot of people is that you can't cover up a mistake with a bunch of detail. Because there IS no detail. Just a handful of lines and shapes.
Consider each line with care; it has to say a LOT. A little poof of fur-shag at a convexity stands in for a few thousand brush-strokes. One line may delineate both form and shadow at once.
It's like going from writing epic poetry to writing haiku.

If you want a regular dose of inspiration/rant/careful consideration (it varies), start watching John K's blog. johnkstuff.blogspot.com, mirrored to lj as johnkstuff. He's a grumpy old bastard and I don't agree with everything he says, but he SURE DOES KNOW CARTOONING.
