The circus was dark and silent, not because there was no one there that night but because the audience was waiting for their favorite magician, Bozu the hippo, to perform. All that gave light in the circus were the spotlights, ready to show Bozu from behind the stage. “Ladies and gentlemen. Please give applause to Bozu the hippo!” said the announcer, also from behind the stage. The spotlights were aimed at the stage, and it was empty. “Where could Bozu be?” asked an audience member. “Is he late to the show?” asked another. Suddenly, Bozu appeared out of thin air. The audience’s cheering and clapping filled the silence in the circus.
“Thank you, thank you.” said Bozu. “I hope I can give you all a wonderful time tonight.” he continued. “Now, for my first trick, I would like to begin with something simple.” he said. Everyone in the audience looked confused as apparently none of them could properly hear what Bozu was saying. Even those who sit the closest to the stage still needed to head their ears to the stage. “Oh, what’s going on? You guys can’t hear me?” he shouted to the audience, who all replied with a “No.” in unison. Bozu waved his magic wand and tapped it to his hat, he opened it and a clip mic appeared. “Is this loud enough now?” asked Bozu, after wearing the microphone. The audience clapped their hands and cheered. “Well… I think I’m gonna take that as a ‘yes’” he said.
“Since my first trick was to make something appear, I think I’m gonna make something disappear.” said Bozu. “Now, who wants to be my assistant?” he asked the audience. Everyone quickly raised their hands and shouted “Me!” as loud as possible, looking to get picked by Bozu. However, to their surprise, Bozu picked the announcer. “Wait? Me?!” asked the announcer from behind the stage. “Yeah, you.” Bozu replied. “Alright, then. I’m coming.” said the announcer. “Oh, no need.” Bozu replied. He waved the magic wand and aimed it at the direction behind the stage and *poof!* suddenly the announcer disappeared, making the audience gasp. “No worry.” said Bozu. “That’s my way of bringing him here.” he added. He put his hat on the stage and pulled the announcer from the hat and the audience clapped in amazement once more.
“So, what are we going to do next, Bozu?’ asked the announcer. “Well, I just want you to pick a card for this one. I’ll close my eyes as you picked.” Bozu answered. Bozu took out a deck of cards from his hat and the announcer picked a random one from the deck, not telling what card it was to Bozu. “Alright, now I want you to burn it.” said Bozu, handing the announcer a lighter. In confusion, the announcer burned his card, wondering how he would get it back from Bozu. Bozu then shuffled the deck and began drawing random cards again and again, but none of them was what the announcer picked. “Oh, wait, is your card inside one of your pockets, announcer?” asked Bozu. The announcer checked all the pockets he had, the ones on his pants, and on his coat, until he found the card inside the pocket which was inside the announcer’s coat. The announcer was surprised, considering he had fully burned his card.
“Now, tell me, announcer: would you like to gain the ability to fly?” asked Bozu. “Not really.” the announcer answered. “But that sounds cool, though.” he added. “Ok, then. I’ll teach you how to fly.” Bozu replied. “It’s simple, just blow up this balloon.” he added, giving the balloon he took out from his coat to the announcer. The announcer inflated the balloon, tied its knot, and tied it to a string. “Alright. Now, to make you fly.” said Bozu. he waved his wand and aimed it at the balloon as the announcer held the balloon by the string. The announcer slowly started flying higher and higher with the balloon on his paw. “Amazing, Bozu!” said the announcer. “But I think you need to get me down. I’m halfway to the roof.” he added. “Oh, just let go of the balloon, then.” Bozu replied. “It’s OK, you won’t crash.” he continued. The announcer let go of the balloon, expecting to go back to the stage safely, but he still flew higher to the roof of the circus. The audience was amazed and, at the same time, wondering how Bozu will bring the announcer back to the stage. Bozu waved his wand and aimed it at the announcer, bringing him back to the stage safely. “I told you you’ll be OK.” said Bozu.
“Now, for my last trick, I’m going to give you all something big!” said Bozu to the audience. He took out another balloon from his coat, this one was pink with his face on it. “Are you going to fly too, Bozu?” asked the announcer. “Of course, not!” Bozu answered with a little laughter. “But I won’t tell you what’s gonna happen. You guys will have to see it for yourselves.” he added.
Bozu blew up the balloon with as much air as possible. At first nothing much was happening but then everyone gasped as Bozu’s belly began to inflate as he continued to inflate the balloon. “Whoa! Is this the trick?” asked the announcer as Bozu kept inflating, along with the balloon but Bozu was too busy inflating so he could only answer with “Mhmm…”. He continued to inflate the balloon with more and more air, making his body bigger and bigger. His body also rounded out, just like a balloon. His suit started to become tighter. The gaps between the buttons of his shirt and coat started to become bigger, revealing his belly more and more. The same happened to his pants and belt but the belt eventually unbuckled as it couldn’t keep up with the pressure from Bozu’s body. The audience members were amazed and some of them even wondered how big Bozu would get until he had to stop inflating.
Finally, Bozu felt out of breath and decided to stop inflating the balloon. He tied the balloon’s knot afterwards and threw it into the air as he felt light headed from inflating the balloon so he couldn’t focus on his actions but he eventually gained concentration afterwards. Bozu was about 10 feet tall after inflating the balloon. The audience then gave an applause for the trick. “Wait… wait… don’t clap just yet.” said Bozu. “I’ll show you my last little trick before finishing today’s show.” he added. Bozu looked for the balloon around him but he couldn’t find it. The announcer helped look for the balloon and the audience members tried looking around them but they couldn’t find it as well. Without their knowledge, the balloon drifted away because of the wind.
“Well… since I couldn’t find what I need… I guess this week’s show is over…” said Bozu in embarrassment, trying to bow but failing due to his round body. As all of the audience finally left, Bozu and the announcer tried to look for the balloon once more, inside and outside the circus tent. About two hours had passed from the searching but they still couldn’t find the balloon. Bozu also had a hard time looking for the balloon as his body was too rounded out to even walk. “Well… it’s already late.” said the announcer. “How about we continue looking it up tomorrow.” he added. Bozu agreed as he, too, was feeling sleepy.
The next week, he tried waddling his way to the diner next door to his house. Fortunately for him, the wind blew to the diner’s direction, helping him drift toward the diner. He tried to enter the door but just like any other doors he tried going through, Bozu was stuck. After successfully entering, Bozu ordered some food and began eating but as he was about to eat his food, he saw his balloon drift by the diner. Quickly, he tried waddling his way outside as fast as he could but the balloon drifted away from the diner the moment he got stuck on the door again.
