You are right, light temperature is the correct and really important term for it. Working with complementary colors for example for light and shadow areas is great. But before it comes to coloring an artwork, the values are in my eyes a bit more important. The effect that some elements in an artwork are highlighted is for sure because of the colors as well (and photoshop effects like color dodge are fantastic helpful tools for this). But to prepare the artwork so that the right elements are highlighted is also the task of the values. I hope that helps :3

There are really many items that comes together in artworks and depending on your individual art style the weight / importance of those items differs. One of the best friends of an artist is self-reflection :) I am thinking of opening a discord, since I got asked recently very often about several art related things.
