Oh my god I fucking hate this scanner with a passionate inferno. THERE AREN'T EVEN ANY SMEARS ON THE PAPER IN THE FIRST PLACE. I CHANGED EVERY SINGLE SETTING THERE IS ON THIS SCANNER AND IT STILL LOOKS AS IF I DIDN'T DO SHIT. My grandma's camera could take a better picture.
But don't worry I messed up so many times on this drawing it doesn't even matter. :I

Alright, that really are not very much options. Strange when you think how Kodak once boasted about their quality in the graphic-department.
What Software are you using to work on your images? Is there a option to "get source" or "import file from" where you can choose your scanner? Perhaps that way you could adjust at least some things like contrast and brightness.
For example I use Gimp 2.6, if i want to scan something I go to "file", "create", "scanner/camera" and there I can select my scanner. After that I get the screen for the preview where I can adjust all the stuff, like noise reduction, coloradjustment etc.
Hope that helps at least something.

Oh, sorry should have mentioned that earlier. Gimp is a graphic program, just like photoshop or what the elite uses. It can do a lot of stuff the big programs can do, only difference, it is free to download. If your interested here is a link to their site http://www.gimp.org/
Although I am still learning the ropes in the fields of drawing, i like to scope around for free software and test them out. So far i liked their features, maybe you can use it too.
