All across the barren land
Still cold from winter's hand
It has been a time for tears
Season of the Goddess return
Through the time when the green leaves hide
The dream of summer has kept us alive
Through the darkness we have survived
Season of the Goddess return
Let the trees be green again
Let us all be free from pain
Out of the ice and into the flame
Season of the Goddess return!

Blessed Ostara my friends. ^.^ Even though its snowing outside here, Luthien's world is dressed in all its Spring beauty. Some Ostara symbolism for you:
Ostara: This word is derived from "Eostre", a germanic Goddess of Spring. This is also where we get the word "eostrus", hinting at the fertility themes this season carries.
Eggs: Again, a symbol of fertility as well as new beginnings.
Rabbits: The proverbial March Hare, a fertility symbol because these rabbits breed in March. Bunnies everywhere, even in your easter basket!
Sunrise: The earth is waking up, coming alive.
Butterflies: Renewal, rebirth, transformation.
Fueled by Red Bull lastnight, I worked to finish my art for the week early so I could post it today for Ostara. Though my scanner did eat some of the color (she's actually wearing pink) I'm pleased as punch with how these turned out, so I've saved high dpi versions to make prints if anyone wants one. ^.^

The rabbits in the corner are just plain cute, especially the one with their ears raised. And I love the trees, both for how they frame the picture, and how elegant all of the branches look.
Luthien's outfit is really pretty, too. Small as it is, at least on my monitor, the knotwork on her sleeves is really nice, and I like the butterfly-shaped brooch she's wearing.
And here's hoping that the snow will melt away, and let spring come to you soon.

Believe me, I'm wishing the snow away as hard as I can. lol
Her brooch is actually this: http://www.tglass.net/TGlass/Goddes.....s%20symbol.jpg
Triple Goddess symbol representing the waxing, full, and waning moon, or the Maiden, Mother and Crone. ^.^
I think Niamh would like to have an Easter portrait done. ;)

Now there's an idea! I was just thinking along the lines of a general spring picture, but an Easter one might be nice, too.
And thanks for the info on the brooch. I'm afraid I'm pretty much an atheist, who was raised by Baptists, so my knowledge of pagan and/or neo-pagan beliefs and symbolism is rather limited. I am familiar with the idea of a triple goddess, at least as she/they appear in certain mythologies like those from ancient Ireland. But I haven't seen too many symbols for the idea, so it's really cool to get to learn something!
(And I apologize if I got any terms or concepts wrong here.)

I did know that. When I was in college, I majored in History, and I spent a lot of time studying both ancient European cultures, especially ancient Ireland, and a smattering of, mostly English, church history. And again and again I saw how Christianity would absorb and transform earlier beliefs, if they didn't try to eliminate them entirely. I remember reading that, in Ireland, the people there were originally told they could stick to the beliefs of their ancestors, so long as they simply put the Christian God above all of their old gods and spirits. That is, until the Church later decided that this was a bad idea. (I can't swear that's what happened, but it's what I learned.)
The thing is, I don't know many of the specifics of what people in Europe believed before the Christian church started to move in. And I don't know anything about Wicca, or any other Pagan beliefs, as it's practiced today, because I've never known anyone who held those beliefs well enough that I felt I could ask them about it. So that's all I really meant. And I just use "pagan/neo-pagan" to try to cover everything from those early beliefs to today, in as little space as possible.

I can make a few and see how they look, I had to adjust the color from the scan but maybe I can take the original and get it copied, that might work out better. I'll need some anyway for Wild Nights at the end of April, I'll let everyone know when I've got them in my hands. =)
