“Don’t be so silly Grandma, there’s no such thing as a Dreamwalker!” a young voice rang through the room, accompanied by a small laugh. It was followed by a huskier laugh overflowing with mirth and the soft sound of a heavy book closing.
“You don’t need to believe me, but it’s true! I saw her myself.” The child looked at her grandmother incredulously, and the old woman raised a brow. “What- would I lie to you, my little star?” She asked and pinched the young girl’s cheeks. Penelope let out a small snort as she felt a little disappointed that her grandmother expected her to believe her old fairy tales. “Grandma, I don’t think you’re lying...I just think you’re crazy!” Penelope teased, earning a slight chortle from Grandma Maya.
“My dearest Penelope, what do you think of when you look at the stars?” Maya asked, tilting her head gently at the green-eyed girl. “Hmmm...I think of space...and how big and empty it is.” the girl answered. “I also wonder what’s out there...and about aliens!” She continued, before Maya gently hugged Penelope to her and rocked the child with her in the rickety old chair they frequented. “Well, did you know that when you look at the stars, the stars look back?” Maya asked. Penelope let out a little snort, but Maya assured her; “It’s true! And the Dreamwalker is one of them. You don’t need to believe in her for her to come to you, Penelope. You might not remember her, but she will remember you.” Maya smiled as she leaned over her chair and lifted a small white bear off of the floor. It was barely larger than a newborn child, white with blue striped markings made of frayed organza ribbons and adorned with an oddly picked lion tail. “She has always remembered me.” Maya murmured as she gazed at the bear’s lifeless gaze, a soft squeeze of the stuffed toy giving the sensation of something hard hidden between its stuffing. “Will you trust me, Penelope?” She asked the child, offering the teddy to the girl. “Yes grandma.” The girl chimed and warmly hugged the plushie to her. “Make sure you take care of her. She doesn’t get to sleep very often. Go along now, I’ll tell you more when you want to hear it.” Maya smiled, aiding Penelope off of her lap and towards her mother.
“Thank you grandma!” Penelope waved goodbye as the pair left.
“Was that wise, trying to tell her of us at such a young age?” Nemui asked Maya, an amused smile on her lips.
“I don’t see any harm in it...I suppose I hope you will Bless her, too.” Maya answered the spectral bear. “Promise me you’ll defend her dreams.”
“You know I will, Maya. She acts aloof because she’s afraid of being judged...but she believes. Don’t you worry.”
Maya gently smiled as she laid her head back, letting out a soft, husky exhale. “That’s good. I hope you can finally rest, too.” She reached a wrinkled hand out to Nemui, squeezing it as she felt her eyes lid. “Just sleep, Maya. I’ll protect you. I promise.”
